166 Stuck in park

Hey Guys,

I recently sold my 166, the buyer has informed me that it is now stuck in park, and sometimes making the reverse beeping noise while in the park position.

Anyone have any idea what might cause this? And a possible solution?

Thanks in advance,

It should be very easy to raise the shifter cover/trim for observation. No tools required. No need to speculate, just sounds like something came loose. Easy to fix and/or replace.

You told him about depressing the brake pedal to get it out of park, right? To release the park lock, remove the small, penny-sized cover on the right side of the console. Then use a screwdriver to depress the manual lock release inside. Presumably the relay or solenoid unlocking the gear lever when you press the brake pedal has packed in.

Not sure about a 166 but late model 24v models have locking solenoid device on shifter that is unlocked by pushing brake pedal so brake light switch unlocks solenoid.

Check that brake lights are working if not switch probably went bad. On 24v 164 there is a manual plunger in side of console you can push to override solenoid to move shifter.

If it is brake light switch that went bad and it has a small potted shunt box in one of the wires you can cut out shunt box and splice wires together to get switch to work.

Have had to do this couple times on 164 late models.
