not a good experience :(

this just happened to me -> 2005 Alfa Romeo GT JTD Review - Carsurvey.org

although I was able to stop (by pressing on the brake pedal with all my strength) before the engine got on fire, the overall situation was the same. revs started to go up - even though I did not use any gas (the pedal was not stuck behind the floor mat) and the brakes did not work...

does anybody have any experience related to the subject? what causes this, why did it happen, and most importantly what should be done in order to avoid a situations like this in the future??!?

thank you!

k.

Wow! I can't believe a "recall" hasn't been issued... (I realize that is the term used in the U.S.A., but I'm sure there is an equivalent in the U.K., right?) This has to be corrected by the manufacturer, where all owners of potentially affected automobiles are called to bring their vehicles to a dealer and have whatever has been determined to be the cause fixed. First time I've read about this happening in an Alfa, but it has happened in other marques. Good thing you weren't hurt! I wonder if it would have been OK to just turn the ignition key off - that would have been my instinctive reaction...

Best regards,

turning the ignition key would have caused the steering to lock, so i decided to use that as the last option.

so anybody got a clue?

IIRC the JTD is a diesel engine yes?
If there was lots of smoke it sounds like the engine was "running away" or running off of not the diesel but rather off of the oil on the cylinder wall which occurs when the rings are shot. This condition for diesel engine includes lots of smoke and uncontrollable acceleration. Turning off the key has no effect, to kill the engine you must (somehow) stall the engine (good luck w/ that) or choke it off, or let it accelerate until the engine catastrophically fails.

I have heard that blown turbos can also cause that to happen. But yes, the only way to stop it is to block the intake.

Thus oil is being fed to the intake and combusting in place of diesel fuel in the cylinders.
