I became a proud owner of my first Alfa, a 156 2.0 TS 1999 from ebay a few weeks ago. Everything seems ok (a panel on the drivers side fell off , but this seems common, and i feel every single bump in the road, but again i think this is also common). Except, during the past couple of weeks, when i am stationery at lights, or in a queue. The car revs itself, at first it was only upto 1000, but today it has been going upto 1500 revs.
Could anyone tell me why this is, and how i can rectify it?
Regarding to the higher revving it is usually attributed to the MAF sensor. It is the barrel shaped device located just before the throttle. You can easily distinguish it as it has a large socket on top. Does your malfunction light on the dash come on?
However, having the car diagnosed via the diagnostics port will show what is the problem. This MAF sensor is an expensive device at around 150€ ...
In addition you mention, feeling the road in every bump ... probably worn out wisbones ? it is a common issue for lower wishbones to wear out and do weird sounds.
The "automatic revving" is usually caused by carbon buildup in the throttle housing.
As your car is not a fly by wire, you could take it apart and spray a generous amount of carb cleaner inside to flush it out. If this fails, it's your idle actuator needs replacing.

i think your car has a fly by wire throttle, your accelerator potentiometer may be gone, expensive bosch unit but easy to replace.
