Hi, a friend of mine owns a 156 Twinspark, and has already removed his rear wheel to replace winter tyres. Found out the pad are down to steel, and removed them as well. Now he cannot get the caliper to retract. He called me for help, as I drove a 156 V6, Guilietta, GTV 2.5, GTV 2.0, Alfetta, but that was up to 4 years ago, and I cannot help him!
Can anyone please provide help/assistance/step by step procedure/link to on-line manual?? It's Easter weekend, and he will be stuck without transport until Tuesday if no-one can help.
It's probably a similar procedure to the 164 caliper - you need to rotate the piston at the same time as you try to push the piston back into the caliper. It's to do with the handbrake adjustment mechanism.
Do a search through the 164 forum: the procedure is listed there (somewhere...)
Thanks a lot! You're right, it has to be rotated and pushed back at the same time - special tool time ! I am sure we will find something to use however.
I have the same problem on my 1999 166 - tried lots of brute force and bleeding.
Next guess was to disconnect the handbrake cable.
Any news on this special tool?
Can we do this at home without it?
Hi,
My friend devised a tool, using what he had available in his garage. Worked quite well. Let me know if you need a sketch or description, I will get the details from him.
Gerhardac if it is convenient for you, please make a drawing or a photo of the tool as it is a shame to pay a garage for brake pads replacement.
I have seen such tool and it is a cylinder with two notches at the end which attach to the brake piston. On the other end you can use a 1/2 inch rachet for convenience.
would be grateful if we can see something - mine are down to the metal also. The car still stops just fine, but the noise makes my family feel ill (sounds like the drill at the dentist)
