Is someone buying an Alfa going to consider the Opel or Saab as options? I would think not, so it might be better to sell them the motors in limited quantity, with an agreement that they not be used in any FIAT models..

I would think that Alfa and Saab cross-shop to an extent. Recent first hand experience was with a friend who was looking for a new car, and looked at Saab, BMW, Jag, and Volvo....

She chose the Saab, in the end....best blend of sport, safety, comfort and value...the Jag rode like a Buick, the Volvo was ugly, and the BMW was too expensive for what you got.

I don't want to digress into brand warfare, but technically Alfa and Saab share the same segment--entry luxury. So according to a marketing exec's line of thinking, you wouldn't want to share with a competitor. Not saying I agree, but I've been around the breed enough to know they would think that way.
