Had 72k service last week and all seemed fine until a couple of days later I had a couple of occasions when the engine stalled on slowing 2 2nd gear. Watching the speedo etc I noticed that when the car dropped to the 1k revs it would begin to jump and the bettery light would come on and the car would almost stall. Whilst accelerating car felt like it was stuttering till i hit 30 plus. Had a similar problem with an old orion (We all start somewhere!) which turned out to be dirt in the carb, intermitently blocking it. Drove back from Midlands to south west today without a problem. Any thoughts would be a help.
We had a similar fault with our 147. It was down to a broken sprak plug and making the car miss fire which fealt like what you are decribing. All we had to do was replace the plug and the problem was solved, Alfa's have a tendancy to break them and when you take them out they seem perfect but they actually break the inner core.
hey Sean I had that same problem with a Nissan Maxima I had one time and it turned out to be the alternator starting to die, but maybe it could be somthing else but hope this helps. good luck and take care.

Hi Damien,
recently had a service, which is when the problem started. Would have gone back only it is nearly 200mls. How do you know which is the faulty one (if it is the problem)? Would this result in a reduction of mpg. Currently running about 50mls less per tank. also feels there is less power to the engine(This could be my imagination)
Thanks
Sean

Ya you will have less MPG all right man. And there will be a reduction in performance too. The only way you will find out what one is causing the problem and if that is the problem, is by taking the plastic cover off the engine. Then when you have this done, try the spark plug nearest the oil filler cap first as that is the one more likely to be broken/corroded then take out the spark plug and hold as if it was in the engine i.e the part of the plug that makes the sparl faceing the ground as it would in the engine. If the core of the plug is sitting on the where it should make the spark you now it is broken.
I've just rememebered too that they mightend have put the plug leads back on correctly, I know that sounds like a long shot but it's worth a try also look for any corrision.
Had the plugs checked, but problem seems to have got worse. Currently, when i try to accelerate there is a stuttering, as if there is some blockage, and normally starts when i go into 3rd, once upto 6th gear not noticeable. Seriously effects acceleration on occasions. Any other thoughts out there?
Thanks
Sean
A MAF is a Mass Air Flow sensor that sits on the air intake. If the MAF fails, you will experience stuttering, misfiring and other ignition related problems. It's one of those things you should get checked if your engine behaves like yours, i.e. idling problems, downshifting etc.

It's not the same. an AFM measures by mechanical means (a spring loaded "door") whereas a MAF is an electronic sensor. Confusing, yes, but they essentially serve the same purpose: to measure the amount of air flowing into the injection system.
After 2 weeks of normal driving, problem has returned after spending £400+ on an airflow meter and new platinum tipped sparkplugs. Now seems to be worse. Stalled 3 times, on the verge even more. In 4th gear stuttered as if in wrong gear until I accelerated. Driving me mad. Any suggestions?
To anyone interested, problem seems to have disappeared! Elsewhere it was mentioned about the car needing to readjust/ reset the ecu. Aware this will happen gradually, although lost the mail showing me how to do it faster. Current problem (Do they ever end) is the thermostat, car running at 70 degrees, not 90, which has had a shocking effect on my fuel consumption. Hopefully fixing it with a mate after getting photo instuctions from another forum.
Since last post problem has occured again a couple of times.Rather than being complicated, seems to have been 2 simple solutions. First i don't let the tank drop below a 1/4 tank because of all the crap in the bottom getting lifted up, which has then need the fuel injtector cleaner to clear this gunk out of the pipes.
