In my Dad's 2l 147 the gearstick is very lose and theres about 1/2 and inch or maybe less of movement before the gearstick moves and even when you put it into gear it still has this fair amount of movement.
I am wondering is there anyway of tightening up to make the movement less or is it just a case of replacing the linkages and if so is it a pain in the hole or a quite an easy job to do?
I have a LOT of sideways movement whilst in 3rd and 4th gear, it's almost as if the gate is a couple of times the normal size. My local Alfa Dealership said the linkages needed taking out, stripping down relubing and rebuilding, nearly £300s worth of work (their quote). Another garage said it was fine, so whod o you believe? It doesn't seem to be detrimental to the drive other than sometimes it can be a bit sticky in 3rd and 4th gear i.e wont go into gear.
I only bought the car recently and test drove quite a few and they all seem to have a comparitively sloppy gearchange to other cars i've driven so I figured its a characteristic of the car. If this is a bad assumption I would appreciate someone letting me know.

Thanks for the reply, since I wrote the thread I have been in a new Facelift model of the 147 and it seems to have the "sloppyness" as the car at the moment so I do believe you are correct to say it is a trait for the cars.
I have a feeling that dealer who quoted you the £300 for the refurbishment of the linkages is trying to pull a fast one because if they where take bad would'nt it be easier to reaplace the lot of them rather than rebuilding them.
Also if another dealership said they where fines kinda points to the one who qouted you was trying to make a quick buck.
Maybe we should swap parts! My 147 has a gear lever that is very difficult to move anywhere. Seems it is lack of lubrication, Alfa dealer quoted £68 to fix it.
I think my 53 147 has the same problem. Without much warning I heard a vague squeaking and not long after I struggled to get it in any gear other than 3rd! Managed to coax it about a mile (was only a few mins from home!) before dumping it. AA came to get it and had to winch it on as you can't reverse in 3rd
Pretty sure my dealer said it's the linkages. They wanted £300+ to fix it.
Tight gear linkages are fairly common with 147's. Problem is usually caused by a bush in the linkage siezing up and its not a E300 job to fix....
I recently had mine sorted out by an independant Alfa mechanic in Dublin, the cost was less then E300 and that included supplying/fitting a new front AR bar !!
Just finished a DIY repair.
Disconnected air hose to get access. Disconnected linkage, removed 3 bolts to remove bracket. Removed shaft from bracket and cleaned up the aluminium corrosion under the plastic bushes which is the cause of the problem. Well greased and all put back in a couple of hours. Working as new.
