brad,
we changed the oil at the track cuz we were braking in a motor that weekend. we ran kendall gt 40W to break it in and while it was up in the air drained it and threw in some mobile 1.

Re: Passengers & Turn 8

brad,
i have given TONS of people rides that don't have time trial licenses and i know other people who have done the same. my understanding was that as long as the driver has a time trial license, he/she can take a passenger. i hope this is the way it is cuz it'd really suck to see something happen that is against rules and the club be liable for it. it'd be good to get a definate confirmation before laguna seca and buttonwillow cuz i see lots of people giving rides there. it'd be to the benfit of everyone.

Glad you had fun at Willow. Yes, you ARE leaving a few seconds on the table in turn 8, because unless your car is capable of times under 1:20 per lap, turn 8 is flat on the floor, all the way from hte entrance of 6. I have never driven a car at Willow that wouldn't go thru 8 flat, and that includes Joel Quaid's Ferrari 360 Challenge, which was right at 150 mph thru 8. My best time in that car was 1:29. Joel has done 1:26 before.

Do you have a time trial license? If you do, than you can ride with Anthony. If you don't, then ride with an instructor. Club policy is that BOTH driver and passenger have to be licensed. We do have lots of good instructors, though.

Congrats on winning your class.

Brad

Wink

Brad,

Are you sure any car can go through turn 8 flat out? I don't doubt that a car with proper tires and setup can go much faster than I was going, but....my GTV6 was riding on street tires and the front end sits very high, pushing alot of wind. It really was understeering quite abit. By lifting just a little, the nose would sit down, the tires would bite a little better and then I could confidently accelerate through the turn.

So next time if I just keep my foot to the floor and the car refuses to stick, will you help me clean the rocks and sand out?

Yes, turn 8 is flat

Yes, Jeff, you CAN go thru turn 8 flat. I have about 10,000 miles on that track, and only came close to running out of road once.

Just try it. It's fun! There is plenty of track, and there is absolutely NO reason to lift even one toe off of the gas pedal.

I'm sure of it. Happy to demonstrate any time, too!

Anthony? Have YOU ever lifted in 8????

The closest I ever came to running out of track there was in that '68 Camaro (set up like one of the old Trans Am cars). Even though that car has probably 600 hp, the dreaded- treaded "old style" tires still stuck enough to get thru there flat. Anthony, you know that kid, right? The red Camaro? He always pits by you guys.......How many hp DOES that car have? I think that car is capable of at least a 1:30. Very fun car.

" It is a top gear turn in most cars"

Turn 9 is 4th gear for me, about 85-90 mph I think. I'm sure I can go in faster, but I've never had the opportunity to run R-compound tires on the big track and my street tires seem to be right at the edge here. Loss of confidence..... but I always aim for that little dip on the inside of 9 (my apex) and when I see the apex I floor it.

I think lighter cars like the GTV with some mods and good street tires can go in at the same speed (or maybe even faster), and in 5th gear too.

yeah, he's my friend eric. its a 69 car built to period correct tran am specs. last time we talked the car had about 600 bhp and he runs them hoosier street td's. that car is capable of doing a 1:32-1:33 at willow. he doesn't drive it enough to get his times down but he is happy with his 1:37. he is currently building a gtv cuz he see's us having too much time with our alfa's. he goes through a set of tires a weekend ($800) and about 40 gallons of gas at $5.50 a gallon, you do the math with the alfa its 3-4 weekends on tires and 15 gallons of gas all weekend.

i only lifted once when i some how broke a rear spring in my milano the first time i ran there. other than that, i have never lifted in a race car. as for street cars, i can't say because i have never driven one there except for a Z06 vette (kept the foot down) which is a little different than most street cars.

Z06

Interesting that you mention the Z06! 75evo mentions "top gear" in the previous post, and my experience in Z06 Corvettes is that you cannot get them out of 4th gear at Willow! Geez! 150+ in 4th (not near the red line) on the straights, and there are still 2 gears left! Impressive cars.....

Thanks for the info on the Camaro. I LOVED driving it! Man, those Trans Am guys were in good shape...that car makes you WORK!

I have a Z06 and now for a fact that the car can be driven flat out all the way from turn 5-turn 9. I know because I have done it. It gets really light going over 6 though. Also I don't know what kind of Z06 you have been driving lately but mine seems to top out at 130 in 4th gear, this gives you a 4th to 5th shift on the front stretch. I have reached speeds of 142 on the front stretch of willow, but you can't possible get that car to go any faster without HELPING it. Just wondering what type of Z06 you drove and with what mods because I would really like that type of speed.

Richard

Z06

Hmmmmmmmmm. I have driven 3 different Z06s at Willow, and maybe my facts aren't quite as accurate. Or maybe 15 years of "seat time" has only made me slow down. Probably a combo of both. All 3 cars were different, actually. Still never found my way out of 4th gear. Still never lifted for 8. I'd be willing to bet that I am on the gas earlier than you in 9 too. Might be wrong. Say, weren't you one of my students at race school in Feb?

Sheesh.........getting sassed by my own student........after he wins the race last weekend.....no thanks to his instructor of course.........the school was obvously a waste of time for a pro like Richard......

OK, Richard. I'm goin' for a ride at the next Willow; )

richard...
didn't you do some pro schools also? that is one thing i wish i did. i only did the arosc street performance school, time trial school, and then university of vara. after that, i enrolled myself in the school of hard knocks...when you spin, think about what you did and don't do it again. i wish i took the aproach that you did, it'd have taken me a lot less time to get to where i am, and i am not even at the top!
