You're thinking of Scott Speed. He had a shockingly bad season - no results, lots of early finishes through crashes and not great qualifying. Was replaced in July 2007, half way through the season by Vettel.

That's the name, all I could remember was Speed...for some reason I had thought that his poor results had more to do with the car, apparently I was mistaken.
McLaren as the sole EMS distributor...at least everyone will be using the same system. IMO, racing has more to do with driver skill than the depth of sponsor pockets.
I did read that Renault is expecting a drop in lap times of 0.4s because of the new Microsoft ECU ware. I assume it's because the units don't hold as much data as the old ones. It will be interesting to see what tricks they develop to compensate for the anticipated time drop. That's a pretty significant margin.

I hate the fact that the governing body has decided to do this. Formula one used to be the pinnacle of what it was possible to achieve with technology... now it's just becoming yet another limited over governed formula series.
Every time this sort of ridiculous over-governing happens in motorsport, the series looses the essence of what made it great in the first place. Witness what happened in touring cars, group B etc.
I used to avidly watch F1, even getting up at ungodly hours to watch the Australian and Japanese races, but for a few seasons before last, I just couldn't be bothered. Only the Lewis / Massa / Alonso / Räikkönen fight made it worth watching last season.
The more they dumb it down for the average joe and to 'encourage overtaking' the less it's really F1.

The hell with Alonso and Hamilton. Who other than me wants to see Max Mosley versus Bernie Ecclestone on Celebrity Death Match?

Mark A,
I agree with you WHOLEHEARTEDLY. I loved when some bit of engineering brilliance resulted in a walkover season (Mclaren in the 80s, Williams in the 90s, Ferrari in the 00s). That was good stuff! Remember the '73 Porsche 917/30? That's what I'm talkin' about!! Can you tell I love a good rout? Bring back the best-driver-with-the-best-team wins, not just one or the other.
Just over two weeks to go, babies!!!!

well be doing the 10 hour drive to melbourne this year (and back overnight on sunday because one of the guys needs to be at work on monday!)
because rumour is this is probably our second last g.p. because the contract expires next year and we cant afford to host it at night under lights for the europeans to watch it at a reasonable hour, so it will go to some rich nation with no f.1. history.

Enjoy It
No United States GP, but who cares. Grand Prix Du Canada! Last year Lewis Hamilton's fantastic 1st win, Takuma Sato's drive of the race, and Alonso off track (was it 3 times?) at the same spot! And, no Jaques Villenueve to kick around anymore...

Aussie GP Party Cancelled
We have to cancel our upcoming Aussie GP party because of a family medical emergency. Apologies to all who were planning to attend. We will be hosting others however!

I don't want to panic anyone, but Takumo Sato will be driving without traction control this year.

Whad ya think about the new qualifying rules? Who has what fuel load?
Kimi.. what luck!
Hamilton..on the pace as last year. Kubbie was fantastic!
Dig those Alfa Safety cars!
Renault, where'd ya go!
Massa, does he have fuel on board?
Pretty interesting especially without Traction Control, but using all the same brains, someone has an advantage and we all know who.

Well it turned out to be a very ugly day for Ferrari. I don't know if they'll get a single point for the Aussie GP---and their results at Sebring were equally dismal!
Hopefully they can get-it-together this next week...
