What was even more surprising is that once in the pits, the mechanics didn't do a single thing about it!!! If nothing else... they could have cut the wire and released the loose pipe. But they sent Kimi back out for the pipe to fall off on its own... into the driver's face shield that might be following behind I suppose. THey were like children... not fixing anything that could be dangerous unless told to by a higher authority. I lost A LOT of respect for this team!!! I love thier production cars because of the history and heritage behind them... but the "TEAM"... and their leadership... i think very little of.

The mathematical probability of the exhaust tube going to other car or people was minimal.
Kimi was lucky because the breakage was in the opposite side of the fuel filling neck… and because the hanging exhaust hitting the intake box let visible the intake trumpets and injectors, and the distance from the exhaust port to the fuel fog in the intake is not so big so it could have turned in fire.

I strongly disagree with your mathematical probability. What kind of math are you doing?!?! When you are in a race amongst other cars and you have something flailing from the back of your car from a mere wire... i think the probability that it could break off completely and go into another car's front end, is pretty good.
I think it was pure negligence on Ferrari's part.

WOW!!! What a British GP! I only wish that Massa had actually shown up, and that Air Missile Kubica had finished in the points. A 3-way tie for the Championship lead.....I'm loving this!

I'll 'second-that'!!!

Apparently the Ferrari techs never got Massa's car properly repaired after his shunt in the practice sessions...so I'll give him a 'pass' on his race performance. Kimi surprised me---I thought he'd do much better. But, as I had predicted in earlier posts: Rubens made it to-the-podium!!! Even w/ a car that can't perform!

Here's hoping for more rain at the German GP!

Regards.

Amazing race, and a remarkable championship battle. Not only is there a 3-way tie on points, but there's no tiebreaker between Hamilton and Massa; they each have 3 wins, one 2nd, 3rd and 5th, and no other points finishes.

Wow! That's as close as it gets.

I'm still shaking my head about just how wrong Ferrari's decision to leave their drivers out on used Inters was...They really gave away any chance they had at a win.

If rain appears in next races, Massa has nothing to do... what s**t of race he made!! this pilot doesn't deserve to be in Ferrari.

Brawn's strategy for Rubens was a masterclass (resembles when he was in ferrari).

The result of the race was a mix of the pilot skills and luck.

Paco.

Hey Ed,

If Lewie and Massa stay this tight in the points-and-results......we may have to set up a fistfight to determine the WDC hah hah hah! Lewie would whup his arse though...isn't he a black-belt or something? I think he said so when he was on Top Gear.

With Max Mosley still in charge, anything is possible...

It's simpler than that actually.

If there's a tie, they go to most wins, most 2nds, most 3rds, etc. til they hit a difference.

If that's all equal, then they review who had the most fast laps over the course of the season.

If that doesn't work, then qualifying positions over the course of the season.

You'd have to go a long way before actually geting to see two little guys going at it like bantamweights......

Sorry but, no, it's not necessarily simpler than that. Here is Paragraph 7.2 from the 2008 FIA Sporting Regulations:

"7.2 If two or more constructors or drivers finish the season with the same number of points, the higher place in the Championship (in either case) shall be awarded to :

a) the holder of the greatest number of first places,

b) if the number of first places is the same, the holder of the greatest number of second places,

c) if the number of second places is the same, the holder of the greatest number of third places and so on until a winner emerges.

d) if this procedure fails to produce a result, the FIA will nominate the winner according to such criteria as it thinks fit."

The Sporting Regs say nothing about fastest laps or Q times or any other objective criteria. Certainly, the FIA could decide to use those criteria, but there's nothing in the Regs that requires them to do so. As unlikely as it might be, three rounds of fisticuffs would be just as legal under the FIA rules.

Well, there you have it. We would have a World Driver Champion (who can't drive in the wet) simply because he does not drive a McLaren.

That would seem to be standard FIA selection criteria under Max Mosley.

Fortunately, we still have a few races to go; it's unlikely that we'll be in the same position at the end of the season. Especially if it rains...

Ed's right.....It would be unprecedented if we had a deadlock at the end of the season. "Could happen", but it's unlikely. Wasn't it 2nd-or-3rd places that gave Lewie 2nd place in the WDC last year over The Eyebrows?

David
