I like the idea of a Road America race it is on the list of track I want to race on. I could make that work in my GTV.

I guess I do have time to restore it in time. I wonder how many west coast GTA's I can gather to share truck space. Imagine an 18 wheeler loaded with GTA's, crossing the US! I can bring 2, just need to check with a couple of the other guys out here.

IMHO if we are to have a wheel to wheel race the venue for the time trials is MUCH better suited to the Alfa Romeo's strengths (handeling). Road America is a Fantastic venue with rolling scenery and ample amenities but it is kind of like driving on a freeway in an Alfa. You are on a straight at full power for what seems like minutes looking forward to the coming off-ramp err turn, then you are on the next straight long enough to wonder if your motor can handle 20 seconds straight at full throttle and over 7000rpm when the next off-ramp comes. If we are going to show off racing Alfas why not on a course that shows it's strengths? One of the turns at Autobahn CC will have most of the coupes lifting the front tire off the ground for about 20' right in front of the largest viewing area for spectators. A tight course will allow closer competition between the lighter lower powered GTA's and some of the monster powered GTaM replica's (Wood, Martinez, Mocas)
I for one would love to be on the track 30+ Alfa's again in a race rather than a freeway parade.

Andy's idea is good as well! :
We want to have a wheel to wheel race in like a 2-3 day event.

FYI, we are working on getting the last 1 1/2 hrs of our Time Trials event at the Autobahn track. In the event you guys would prefer a separate track day, and providing you sign up for the actual Convention track event for the initial $200 (or else we run the risk of loosing our behinds) an additional track day will cost approx. $12,000 per day:
40 cars @ $300. per
35 cars @ $343. per
30 cars @ $400. per
25 cars @ $480. per
etc.....
We shouldn't have a problem finding enough experienced corner workers and this cost should cover track insurance. If the idea is to have a complete full track day, then we can make it happen on Tuesday the 18th prior to the commencement of the Convention. This way, we bend zero rules and have a separate ALFA event. that would conveniantly coincide with a huge Alfa get-together party.

Carm,
I think the sooner you open up registration the better... I remember that Detroit started accepting entries in late October, and since there were only 50 spots for the regular TT many committed early...
Best regards,

To cover those costs we will likely need to open this up to many different classes of cars. If we have a whole day we could run several run groups. We could run a practice, qualify and race for each group.
This is a very hot idea! It is going on my race calendar!

Just remember that doing a wheel to wheel event will be very sticky on the day of the TT. Russ Neely (the comp chiar) is very sensitive to this.
If you can define the end of the TT event, and start a new event, with contract, insurance, sanction, ect, etc. I'm sure we can work something out. Just start working on this NOW if you really want to wheel to wheel.
(for the racers, I think it's a great idea, BTW- always wanted to do an Alfa Cup like they do in England).

Road America or Autobahn?
Either way, count me in! I can't imagine that we wouldn't be able to get 30-40 cars if we start working on it right away. We had >20 Alfas at the Mid-Ohio SVRA "cars of italy" race.
Regarding the track choice, we should consider that Road America was built around the time that the AROC was being formed in Chicago 50 years ago. And if I were towing from California and hadn't raced there, it would be my choice. There is a picture in the 50th anniversary of the track book that shows a G-Production race from the early 60's with at least 5-10 Giulietta's leading the way. Very nostalgic! There are 3 very long straights, but the corners are very important. Turn 14 leads onto the front straight and your exit speed is critical. Turn 1 can almost always be taken 5 mph faster than you think. The Caroussel is almost a skid pad. And the Kink separates the men from the boys (I'm one of the boys). The track also has some of the best spectator viewing anywhere.
I haven't seen an SVRA schedule yet, but this year the Mid-Ohio race was the last week of June. If that is true for 2008, it might be a good opportunity for those with a long tow to race the weekend after the convention too?

I don't really care on how we slice it. A Tuesday morning at Road America can still be an option. Keeping it out of AROC by-laws would make perfect sense. The most important factor is that we make it happen. We are nine months away, we need monetary commitment from the serious players.

This could be like the multi day driving tour.... just for racers.
That would be way cool.
ESPECIALLY if the actual driving tour stopped by the same day. hmmm, there's some planning...
