Anyone know why the Mille Miglia

Anyone know why the MM stopped all out racing in 54'?
Was it because of safety?

The Mille was last run in '57 and was closed by the government for safety reasons.

Quote from this Wikipedia web page:

The race was banned after a fatal crash in 1957 that took the lives of driver Alfonso de Portago, his co-driver/navigator, and eleven spectators, at the village of Guidizzolo. The crash was probably caused by a blown tire. The manufacturer was blamed and sued for this, as was the Ferrari team, which did not change tires in order to save time.
Still, while 1957 may have been the last race according to the "old" rules, this web page indicates there were three more races (in 1958, 1959 and 1961) that used a slightly different route and with restrictions concerning cars and speed.

I love Italy! The government bans something and, eh!, who cares?

(I wonder what happened in '60?)

Congrats but the '07 edition was run about three weeks ago. So that gives you about a year to get an eligible pre-'57 sports car, prep it, and run the '08 event as a honeymoon. Sounds fun!

The later races were road rallys, rather than racing events.

The Italian Wikipedia page says that the "three last editions" (1958, 1959 and 1961) had several short sprint stages inbetween pure transport stages, and that the sprint stages generally were hill climbs. Further: the 1958 MM was 1493 kilometres long, but only 83.5 of those were pure racing.

Not much of a Mille Miglia if you ask me. If the information is correct, it sounds like they tried keeping the MM name alive just to capitalize on it. In my opinion, they're doing the right thing nowadays since they can't really race anyway. Compared to the old MM edition, the modern version is basically a parade of impossibly expensive and rare cars, driven by the richest of the rich, or in quite a few cases, the oldest of the old.

It's amazing to watch in any case. Where else can you see the various major European auto maker's entire museum collections out driving? My pics from the MM 2006 scrutineering and start are here.

More MM..

Yep, just missed the '07 event...
Plans to marry there are in the future (09)
As of last night we are planning the itenerary starting in Brescia! YEA!
Then, east to Venice, down to Tuscany & Rome and further to
Capri and Pompei. So, we should be able to see a nice collection of vintage stuff.
According to the MM.org site, entry fee is 20,000 euro. ( $30+) never mind, who the heck is going to loan me a $100,000 + vehicle??
So, spectating with a good digital will have to suffice.
Just the experience of being there will be a major treat in it's self!
Forgot to mention we will have our kids with us ( 3 girls and a son )
from our "previous lives" so to speak. No, they will NOT be hanging around for the honeymoon end of it !!
