Fuel Cell install/new trunk floor ?'s

Hi all,

I'm at the point in my race Giulia Super build where I need to make a new trunk floor. Basically I have nothing. The original fuel tank rusted to the floor and had to be cut out. The spare tire well was pretty much gone so I cut it out too. I've left the piece in the center that has the muffler hanger on it, but that piece is not that rigid. What I need are some detailed pictures of various installs so I can figure out the best way to do mine. I have my buddy's MIG welder and he'll be bringing over his sheet metal shear/bending brake. I already have a sheet of 20 gauge cold rolled steel and a 10 foot piece of 1/2 inch square tubing. My metal supplier is 10 min. away so I can get pretty much anything.

Also, it seems that if I put the cell ( Fuel Safe ED112) with the longer side sideways that it'll be kinda close to the right rear tire. I could turn it 90 degrees and have the long side front to back. How close to the rear tire is too close ?

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Ciao,

Dan

Fuel Cell location

I would guess you have weighed the issue of removing the spare tire hole & moving the Fuel cell over. SCCA rules say within 6 inches of original location. So if you put the left side of it within 6 inches of position of the old tanks right side your ok & balance is better. You are going to need larger than 1/2 inch tubing. Min. 1 inch.
Good luck! Pic is of my Guiletta modified by Steve Schwitters (about 20 yrs ago) using 1' tubing to brace for floor/panhard rod/tank roll bar rear supports etc.
Maybe it will give you some ideas...

Hey,

Thanks for the pix Richard ! Awesome work tying everything together. For the record the square tubing I have is 3/4", not 1/2 ( just checked ).

Here are some pictures I was using as sort of a guide. They're from a car in the Netherlands. I'm intrigued by what appears to be custom upside-down "u-channels" made of sheet metal.

I don't know if you have your fuel cell already, but I have an ATL saver cell (15 gallons) new in the box from an abandoned race car project if you (or anyone else) is interested. I'll probably post it in the classified section later this week.

PM or e-mail if interested.
