New Champ Car Destroys F1 Lap Time at Laguna Seca
Quote:
MONTEREY, Calif. (March 10, 2007) – The Champ Car World Series is known around the world as the American interpretation of Formula 1-style racing, but today a Champ Car driver in the brand-new Panoz DP01 chassis raised the bar on anything a F1 car had ever done at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Three-time and defending Champ Car champion Sebastien Bourdais (#1 McDonald’s Cosworth/Panoz/Bridgestone) demolished the existing track record at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with 10 minutes left in today’s final test session, with his time of 1:05.880 (122.295 mph) breaking the mark set in 2006 by Ricardo Zonta in the Toyota F1 machine when it came over to turn some laps as part of the Monterey Historics Festival.
Bourdais not only broke the record but became the first driver ever to run a lap around the fabled California layout in less than 66 seconds. For his efforts, Bourdais and his Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing squad were awarded $5,000 by Champ Car for breaking the F1 record.

Yet another example of the best racing on earth.

Today, in only the 6th day of testing prior to the 2007 Champ Car World Series season, the new Champ Car Panoz DP01 piloted by 3-time series champion Sebastien Bourdais set a new track record at Laguna Seca.
Toyota rolled up with their F1 team in the fall with the intent to smash the existing record set by a Penske Lola with a cheater engine from Honda in 2000. Toyota spent how many millions of dollars on their F1 program? All to run a 1:06.300 "all-out" at Laguna.
This afternoon Bourdais ran a 1:05.880.

Not to take anything away from the new Panoz but Toyotas lap times aren't exactly anything to write home about. Marketing ploy to drum up viewership IMO (and I hope it works!).

If the F1 standard is a toyota, with no competition, nothing to win, and just showing off at a historic festival, then this matters.

You have got to be kidding. Are your seriously comparing times from an exhibition at the Historic Festival with the Champ car times? I like Champ cars, watch Champ cars and wish success on American open-wheel racing. But let's be honest with ourselves. A F1 race at Laguna Seca would yield significantly faster laps.

Now I like Champ Car, but let's be serious.
1. Toyota ain't exactly a top team.
2. An exibition car and isn't minutiously pepared/customised for the specifiactons of the track like in actuall F1 GP racing.
3. An F1 evolves in a year, thus at the end of the year the car can be 2 seconds faster per lap than the begining.
Also didn't the track changed since the "F1 record" ?!

Over the last few years I've enjoyed Champ Car more than F1 due to the competition. But I know that a Renault, Ferrari or even are properly sorted and driven Toyota would beat a Panoz.

If you want an accurate comparo between F1 and Champ look at lap times for the Gilles Villenueve Curcuit in Montreal. Both series run here in anger. I'll get back to you guys with some numbers from last year. (Hint: The F1's will be noticeably faster)

There is no comparison, they simply look similar.
Like comparing a NASCAR with a Formula Ford, miles different thanks to very different rules/regulations.
I just wish F1 rules would free up again so we could have some real clever thinking again ...

Wow
Wow All of the cart teams but one could not set the track record, and only after Two or three days of testing and laying down rubber etc did one driver at the end of the day make it. Yes Hats off to them that .420 of a second is well a ton of time come on. The F1 set a new record every time it took the track first time was on Thurs on rain tires "not an offical time run" just ask any one that went the F1 was not at full song for the track. I will buy you a cold one any time I did not think they would set the record and you did.
I just want to have one indy car "type" of race not two.

I've been to many F1 and Champ car races and have watched both for decades. I will have to say that while F1 has the best and most technologically advanced cars in the world, Champ car is more fun to watch. Much more passing and no one team with 400 million budget will dominate another. There is no race more exciting than the Cleveland race where they can go four wide on the airport track.
Even Ayrton Senna said Champ cars were for real drivers.
