race cams for 95hp sud

Have built a 1490 motor bored 1mm to 85mm, forged pistons raised comp to 12:1, and wondering about cams?? Suggestions.
Has been ported and has matched length heads, runs on race fuel 115 octane with std valves. Car is used for circuit racing in NZ

I'm afraid I don't have much expertise with your engine; last I saw one was in my mom's Sprint Veloce, with twin carburetors on the same 1490 motor as you have. Sounded great.

However, won't you please post a picture or two of your Alfasud?

So if this is a 95bhp engine, then I take it that's one with the "split-lobe" cams (adjust clearance with allen key) rather that the later single lobe design?

The choice of cam might depend on those pistons you mentioned. The really high lift, long duration cams tend to need valve cut-outs in the pistons.

... or Autodelta for these, but really you are better off going to a race engine builder or engineering shop that grinds cams and selecting you own profile.

Why do I say this?

Because the cam profile you are after, needs to be selected to work with the rest of the engine development work ... and when I went through this proces I was not able to get enough information from Alfa Romeo ... thus selected a little blind.

I would suggest that you consult a Cosworth cam grind catalogue and select based on intended rev range ... and get your cams ground to these specs.

Edgel Automotive in Auckland NZ will be able to help you select a cam ... as he helped with mine (many years ago) ... and we used a Cosworth profile.

One thing that I would seriously suggest is to not use race profiles with the split cam design ... as with the heavier valves springs and the higher lift the cam followers will dish ... and destroy the cambox housings. Been there and done that. Far better to get hold of the latter style cams and shim type cam followers. We made our own. Many NZ race Alfa Suds have suffered valve drops due to this design weakness.
