I want to put my video camera in the GTA for the AROSC event in a couple weeks but do not have a roll bar to mout it to. What are you guys w/o roll bars mounting your cameras to?

Camera Mounts
Anthony and Simon: try the camera mount bar that screws into the B-pillar shoulder strap hard points offered by IO Port Racing for a 944 Porsche. It is exactly the right size for a GTV6 and allows for the OE 3 point belts to be maintained. I think this has been on the Alfetta/GTV6 thread. sorry I don't have a link. works just fine for a '6, don't know about a GTA but maybe they have something that will... presumably the GTA does not have 3 point belts - can you attach mounting points to the existing B pillar? all of this begs the question though, why no roll bar in the GTA?
thanks for all of your good efforts on behalf of the BB and happy holidays to you both)

Griffo,
I'll look into that IO Port one. The one Simon posted might work on that integrated roll bar the car has. You can see more pics and info on it on the thread for the car in my signature. After the car was retired from racing in the mid 70's, it was restored with an interior and the integrated roll bar I mention. I'll be taking that out and bringing the 1/4 window and b pillar back to its original look and with a real roll bar this spring.

Anthony,
I once looked into this for the drivers schools. There is a pro camera shop in LA ( sorry I can't remember the name ) that had a catalog. In it was a large suction cup that would attach inside to one of the windows and then a myriad of mounts could be fit to it.
Hope it helps !

Anthony, if you adding a full cage later, I would try to find a way to make the Pegasus type mount work. It will work great once your cage is in. It can be put into about any position as long as there is a tube somewhere close.

just a though in lateral direction
Anthony, what are you actually mounting, a small lens wired to a recorder safely mounted somewhere else or a complete hand held camera? If it is a complete handheld camera then it is worth noting that the tripod mount on those was intended for minimal static forces and may come loose in case of an accident and all of a sudden you have a projectile inside your car.
Idelly you want something that will hold camera in place by more then just a tripod bush.
Just a thought!

Anthony,
If you have access to a lipstick camera/lens, you can mount it to the side of your helmet at the level of your lower jaw, by just using velcro and a small bracket we made to sandwich the lense up against the helmet. This is what we do for shifterkart racing, and given the beating that your body takes, the footage turns out very well.
Good luck and can't wait to see your footage!

I would advise some caution if putting a camcorder in a car without securing it really well. The small 1/4" screw on the bottom of the camera is only there to stop it falling off a tripod, not to withstand impact forces in an accident.
We built a case that bolts onto the rollcage, and which has the camera pretty much enclosed by metal straps (padded).
One of the organisers of the "Dunlop Targa" a 5 day tarmac rally here in New Zealand told us that they have some wonderful video clips of camcorders separating from their mounts and going right through the windscreen in accident situations. The rules are somewhat tighter these days !!
It would be rather nasty to be sitting in front of a camera and catch it on the shoulder or neck !!
The lipstick sized cameras sound like a great idea, and helmet mounting sounds a great idea. Are they readily available ?

I'll try to post a pic of the set-up soon... as well as get info on where you can pick one up. At the time I got mine I worked for a firm that manufatured instruments for Least Invasive Surgury... namely arthroscopes and the like... so i had access to all the vendors of the video and camera equipment that connected to the scopes.
Cheers

The old FF Underground (now apexspeed.com) had a large discussion on in car cameras a year or 2 ago. You may have to register to use the search feature.

pics of camera set-up
In these pics you should see a small digital video camera (silver), a small battery pack that powers the lense and mic (blue), A lipstick lense in a carbon fiber cradle (aluminum color with a black band around it), a mic (black sqaure that velcros inside of helmet near your jaw), and a small black soft case with a set of keys next to it to put size into perspective. The other pick shows how everything packs away and how the camera velcros to the side of the helmet. The pack has a loop on the back side that you can put your belt through and wear it on you lap.
The results are just like those you see during champ car racing when they show shots from Paul Tracy's helmet cam!!!
Cheers

PS I hope the pics show up!
