Clay Regazzoni killed in road crash

Former Grand Prix driver Clay Regazzoni has died in a road accident near Parma, Italy on Friday. Mr Regazzoni was 67.

Regazzoni made his Formula One debut for Ferrari, driving alongside Jacky Ickx in the 1970 Dutch Grand Prix. Finishing fourth in that first appearance, the Swiss driver went onto win his maiden Grand Prix victory just four races later at Monza.

He won a further four Grands Prix during an 11-year Formula One career. In 1980, whilst driving for Ensign, Regazzoni crashed heavily during the race at Long Beach and sustained severe spinal injuries. The incident ended his Formula One career.

That is sad news . I always looked forward to his running at The Glen and it seemed whenever he had an "off-course" adventure, I seemed to be there. RIP .

Here's a guy that knew how to drive cars. I've seen him in many Watkins Glen events, especially in the hot Porsche cars during a "Glen six hours event. very sad. A true driver.

I met him when I was a student ten years ago, while working at a hotel near Monza during the summer. He arrived in some contraption looking not unlike a Jaguar XJR15, festooned with hand controls. I was assigned to go down to the underground garage to collect his bags. Rather touchingly, I noticed that he was changing out of a pair of racing shoes as I arrived next to his vehicle. Old habits die hard.

Alex.

The the Group Picture. This is at the Italian Embassy were pre-race awards were given to the Scuderia del Portello. Also in the picture Prisca Tariffi. The other pictures are in the service stage in Mexico City with Arturo Merzario's (ex-Ferrari F1 driver) car being serviced. And the last Picture - the Scuderia del Portello still at Italy for their presentation.

Sad but it's probably the way he wanted to go.

I remember him when we was driving with Lauda at Ferrari.

Great pictures Eliseo and Lowmileage, thanks for sharing.

Clay was one of my childhood/teen heroes, along with Mario, P Hill, Lauda, Ickx, Clark, Donohue, Parnelli, and Emmo.

Sad indeed, but as alfa-sport says, probably the way he wanted to go. Just like Steve Irwin.
