Ahh, holding onto the past!
I still can't get over how awesome the Champ Car season was.

I can see the same or better racing at my local SCCA events, so what makes Champ Car special? The no-names driving the cars? The 17 sponsor-challenged cars on the grid? The ever-changing formula/circuits/teams/drivers?
I was a huge CART fan and always went to numerous races in the 90's, including Mario's last, and I am a big fan of US open wheel racing in general, but I am realistic to admit that Champ Car is in an extended "slump" and really isn't anything I can't see at my local SCCA races. When Penske and Andretti and all the big names and money defected to the IRL it really hurt, and even though there have been the rumors the two dysfunctional series continue, to the detriment of US open wheel racing. And if you don't think the driver quality is down, then why can't a three-time Champ Car series winner get an F1 test, let alone a drive? I'm hoping for better, but right now things are pretty bleak.

Yes I agree that the early 1990s were the hight.
Also S.B. to knowledge turned down a test for BMW since he would not be confirmed as a team driver but rather a test driver.
Who knows, he might have replaced Villeneuve.

He was offered a test drive contract at BMW.
I don't think the driver quality is down. You just won't let go of the past.
Please explain to me the 17 (18 actually) sponsor-challenged cars? They're all there. McDonalds, CDW, Gulfstream, Bell Micro, HP, Indeck, Aussie Vineyards, Ford, Bridgestone, Sherwin Williams, etc etc etc
Things are not bleak at all. We had a season of AWESOME racing, even better attendance, next year there are going to be more races, more teams, more cars, more action, and a ton more tv coverage.
I don't think the stands were full at -any- IRL race this year...
What puts you in a position to say that? Were you at any Champ Car races since 1994? What about this year? last year? the year before? Doesn't sound like it.

I am slightly with Apex here. I haven't been able to see this year's CART series except for one race. Seemed a pretty good race.
