+10000.Ιt seems that they prefer the golden years of the Alesi/Berger duo. With 2 wins in 5 seasons

I'll wait for Sunday myself - there have been too many rumors to start writing Schumi's retirement at this point.

I second Matt...I'd rather wait until Sunday for bad news! Plus, none of the F1 sites I've looked at today mention this. We'll see...

Part of the reason Schumacher "stayed and fought" at Ferrari was his eight figure paycheck that happened to be around $70,000,000.

I don't think anyone can deny his technical/driving prowess. Legendary. It's just that he has very limited charisma. He may ahve driven Italian cars, but his teutonic stoicism left me cold. IMHO.

Come on Monty, give it a rest. Schumacher did what no other driver has been able to do in the modern era, rebuild (or in this case, resurrect) a moribund team that had failed for 20 years and turn it into a dominating World Championship team that stands as one of the most successful in F1 history. JV failed miserably at BAR, and Toyota's drivers/engineers/management still have a way to go. Schumacher left a championship-winning team and went to a perennial loser (I know, I suffered all those loooooooong years in the wilderness) with the intention of building a winning team. He, with management's support and funds, recruited exceptional engineers and managers, and returned Ferrari to glory. Whatever his compensation is, I've never heard any complaint that he is overpaid. Having been in Italy several years ago for one of his victories on home turf, I would opine that Italians would gladly pay him triple for what he and the team have accomplished. And regardless, while I have read and heard many criticisms of MS, I can't recall anyone saying he is a money-grubber who only cares about the top dollar. MS thrives on winning, not money.
I hope he wins the championship this year and stays for a year with Kimi. Whether you like him or hate him, he is the defining driver of this era and I want to be able to continue to see him on the track at least for another year.

Alesi had a good career in F3000 and was one of the best there but never in Formula One. Alesi scored 241 points over 13 seasons. Almost 19 points per year avg. Had 1 win (Canada 1995), 2 poles and 4 fastest laps. Though he was good and was consistent for a couple of years, he could never be considered one of the best. I liked him except for the fact he could never decide if he was going to be French or Italian..
Schumacher has raised the bar for which all future champions will be measured. Whether or not he retires this weekend, I am happy I was able to witness him rewrite the record book.

What will he do next? Perhaps he will manage a race team?

Almost forgot about Niki Lauda.

Well, Prost took a bath, but the wily Scot got out at the right time and sold to a buyer with deep pockets at the high water mark, so I don't think he did so badly.

As I peruse back through MS's career, one would have to say he has been a brilliant driver who generally has had the best car on the track most of the time. Having said that, I would also note that his entire racing career has been documented as checkered with really dubious and unethical tactics against other drivers, culminating in at least two championships that should have gone to others, except for MS taking the potential winner out demolition derby style at a critical time. He also has been able to garner team orders in his favor, to the detriment of his various teammates, and the disgust of many race fans.
No question about it, the man has been a brilliant driver, but an overly ego driven bully with a significant lack of ethics. A man without ethics is a loser in my book.
Goodbye MS, alas, we knew you too well.

Del - perfect description of the World Champion. The stench of Rascasse has not only lingered, but prompted a major magazine, "F1 Racing" to chronicle his dark history on 11 pages of the July 2006 edition.
A World Champion that serves as a modern day Foil is a guy by the name of Valentino Rossi.
