Historically, National Conventions held in the midwest tend to be smaller than ones held in more populous areas. The one we put on in 1999 in Kansas City was about the same size. On the other hand, last year's event in Seattle was huge, and I predict a big turnout in Detroit and the following year for the 50th Anniversary of AROC bash in Chicago (provisionally approved by the Board). However, they still had folks from something like 23 different states show up. Thanks to all the OK gang for doing the often thankless job of putting on a great event.

Convention
Exactly was is huge vs. what is small? Just curious as to the level of participation at he national level. Does anybody know the level of participation for each of the last five years?

Last year, one of our AROC BOD members attended a conclave of car clubs to see how other clubs did stuff and share ideas. Most of the major clubs in the USA were in attendance, like the BMWCCA, the Porsche Club of America, etc. One of the really interesting things to come out of that meeting was that AROC actually has one of the highest percentages of members attending their National Convention of any club. We have around 4500 members, and we get anywhere from 250 to 500 people attending our Convention depending on the year. The BMWCCA has something like 75,000 members, and they only get a few more people attending their conventions than we do. Ditto for the PCA and many of the British clubs. So while the raw numbers may seem small sometimes, they are pretty darn good on a percentage basis.

Couldn't agree more, Greg!! The ultimate Alfa experience is the drive! (we don't own these things just to tinker with.....do we? )
Credit though needs to go to all the other attendees that drove a street car to the Convention with bonus points to those that entered one or more events. Two such others are those that Jaci and I caravaned from New Jersey to Tulsa with; fellow BBer Joe Cautela in his 67 GT Senior, who drove in the TT, autox and at least one rally, and The Gellers who entered their original, unrestored 69 Spider in the Concours.
Although we didn't get together for a group pic, there were almost 40 members from the AlfaBB in attendance! It was pleasure to see old friends again, make new ones and to put a face to many BB users.
About a half hour from home on the return trip, I was thinking about posting that the only casualties on the trip, other than the thousands of bugs on the nose of the Alfa, was a two month old leftside doorcheck that broke. But it was not to be as I had to deadstick the GTV to the side of the road. Seems that after a 3000 mile trip and with but 15 miles to go, the original Fispa mechanical fuelpump took a dump. Since everyone carries a spare fuelpump onboard, it was a simple matter to change out and off we went.
My hats off to all of those who organized and ran a stellar event!

I was the driver in the other GTV6 and I too was using third around the track. I tried shifting a few times and decided it wasn't worth it given my skill level so just stuck with third. Coupled with that was that it wasn't my car so I was more nervous about breaking something but I was happy with my times for being my first time trial (also in the 1:56's), managed to get my three timed laps within a .5 second window.
Our GTV6 was driven to the convention from California and the we drove it most of the way home to Massachusetts only to have the water pump seize 249 miles short of home :-(. You haven't lived until you've got three people squeezed into the cab of a flatbed with the driver falling asleep at the wheel and almost side swiping a semi, good thing the GTV6 was strapped down well!

Being that you and brian drove the car to the event and home, you did deserve the trophy for participation! Both Dave and I trailered our prarticipating cars.
I've had too many issues at the track to really chance not trailering anymore. It's not like it's a trailer queen, as she spent more time off than on once we started driving her.

Actually only Brian drove from CA to OK, I flew into OK for the convention and then tagged along for the ride home. We rolled the dice and got snake eyes this time :-). Last year was much more successful driving from San Jose to Seattle and then back to NH and MA after the convention, me in my Verde and him in his Alfetta.

I just rolled in last night from the convention. I haven't figured up total mileage but it's well over 3,000. After a stop in Indiannapolis at the speedway to visit relatives I cut north to Watertown, NY abd turned into the Agirondack park heading east to Tupper Lake. That was a 14 hr pull at 70-80mph. The next day I continued across the park to Schroon Lake and Lake George and finally home. I really enjoyed the Hallett track as it was challenging to find a decent line. I was nowhere near set up properly but was able to get around ok and didn't tear the car up. Having real tall rear end gears and street tires and 11.0 cams I was either maxxed out in 2nd or low to mid range in 3rd. I never could hit 4th. Papajams set up of 4:11 rear w/ the veloce cams were more usable as power came on low in the rev band coupled with a shorter gear. (and better tires). But live and learn right? I experienced occasional brake dragging having rebuilt the master just before leaving and upgrading the front w/ the 2.0 calipers and rotors. Other than that the car ran flawless. I was concerned about high heat conditions during the deco rally but everything held. It was 94 degrees in local Tulsa stop and go for the rally and the temps soared! There were many nice cars at the convention and of course great people too! Once I get sorted out I'll get a bunch of film developed and scanned. Kev, Brian, sorry to hear about the pump. All in all, though not bad for an unknown on a cross country jaunt though eh?, Joe

Kevin, you did a great job. I was very happy to see another GTV6 that was driven there. I think leaving it in third is a good plan for a novice at that track, there is just too much else to concentrate on. Sorry about your water pump, but hey that was a long drive in an old car and it almost made it!
Eric, if I owned your GTV I would be afraid to drive it period! Itīs really sharp. I donīt blame you for trailering, plus someone from Detroit might melt in the southern heat without A.C.

I got in my daily driver this morning to move it out of the way after not having driven it in more than 3 weeks. It feels like a tank!! It's a GS Regal but it feels so Big! I was saying to myself, I drive this thing all the time to work?? The chairs are big, the steering vague, I can't hear the motor, and I pulled the headlight switchout twice looking for the ignition key!! (the jrs is on the left side). I can't bear the thought of driving it to work tomorrow. Maybe it's time for another Alfa as a daily and commit the Jr to track events? Geez, am I nuts or what?

Greg, you are too kind- it's totally a 5/5 car. We may have gotten second in the concour 105/115 coupe class, but that's because there were only 2 cars entered!

This is a little off topic, but does anyone know how or if I can get a larger version of the picture in Papajamīs post that has all the Alfas in it. My son and father are in it with our cars 3rd and 4th behind the blue Montreal. I would really like to have a bigger version of that.
