Targa Tasmania 2006 - Alfa success

Hi all,

Just thought you might like to know that Targa Tasmania has just finished here. It's a 5-day tarmac rally around Australia's most southern state, the Island of Tasmania.

I'm pleased to report that Alfa's won two of the four classes in the event.

A 1981 Alfa GTV6 won the classic event by 31 seconds from a Porsche 911 Carrera (with 911s coming in 3rd and 4th as well).

A 1938 6c 2300B Mille Miglia Spyder won the Historic category by a handy 24 minutes.

Your winners:

I've a bunch of other photos and info about the event at Alfablogger.

I was reading on a Porsche web site how the 911s did really well, blah, blah, blah, but no mention of which marque actually won!

Congratulations to Ian Morris and Alex Molocznyk for doing the transaxle Alfas proud!

Every year at this time, right after Targa, there's a whole bunch of letters to the editor of the local newspaper. They complain about the road closures and the rich boys racing around with their toys etc etc. The complaints were especially loud this year as three spectators were injured when some idiot in a Mini lost it and ended up in the crowd. A very sad event, but anyway....

One of the letters I read this morning, this guy was referring to how he was travelling up one of the highways up north over the weekend and he was overtaken by some red 1930's car, that then went on to overtake 3 other vehicles before pulling back into the lane. He was disgusted by this outlandish piece of driving!!

All I could think of was: Go Mille

Alfa 6c

I have seen the Alfa 6c in action doing sub-15 second quartermile runs at an Event called the Vintage Motorsport Weekend ( http://www.vintagemotorsport.com.au/Index.htm ) .
John Lawson runs an AC-Amilcar special as well and would be about the same age as his Alfa!

Ian Morris and Alex Molocznyk do some seriously good work in this car, putting heaps of 911s etc back in their place, especially when it rains, this crew it the class of the field, making up minutes on cars that have a better power/weight ratio in the dry. They have done this on several Targas now.
AND it runs virtually a STOCK engine! I have gone over the rules several times with Ian , and I'm frustrated by what the rules don't allow, because I know how much better the car could go with all the things I supply for other classes. Which makes me even more impressed with their results in a highly competative class.
Well done guys!
Vince.

My apologies to anyone that tried the links above in the last few days and were unsuccessful. The shared server that the site sat on was siezed by the Feds in the US due to some unsavoury sites being hosted by the hosting company I used (past tense as I've now rebuilt the site on a new server here in Oz).

I've summarised all the Targa Tasmania info I could salvage from the old site here. This includes a few pics from the 2005 event as well.

And Vince, are you in Melbourne? Would love to meet up with you should I get over there in the near future (I'm in Tassie). You're dead right about this being a highly competitive class. It's probably the most exciting part of the competition. The cars in this class are generally attainable for the common guy (OK, Porsches maybe not) wheras the modern class is really for the rich kids in a lot of cases.

This win for the GTV was a top-notch effort, esp as it was a dry track for most of the event. The rain kicked in on the last day or so and the Alfa shoned through in the conditions.
