Thumbs up 2006 World Touring Car Championship

Alfa didn't do so bad in the first round of the WTCC considering it was unclear if they would even field an entry this season.

http://www.fiawtcc.com/

Wouldn't it be like them to win it all when not really trying!

(Well, we can all hope, can't we?)

A lot has changed since the last time I looked at the site. Nice to see Tarquini with a ride, albeit for SEAT. Where is Giovanardi?

Now, I realize Alfa is running "last year's cars" basically, with the 156. Can I assume that everyone else is running their latest models?

As I understand it, the new president of Alfa had the idea in the Fall that the new 159 was a luxury sedan and not a sport sedan. This meant that (in his mind) racing the 159 would sully its luxury image. BUT Alfa had a contract with NTechnology to run the Alfa factory touring car effort through the 2006 season. After the legal wrangling was concluded there was no time to prepare an all-new 159 race car, so they'll race the 156 for another year. This is why it was surprising they did so well. On the other hand Monza is their "home track".

Have some rules ben changed, as they were saying they had 20 more horsepower (280+) as long as 3 years ago!

Ooops, Alfa didn't do so well in rounds 3 & 4 in France.

Points standings after 4 rounds:

1 BMW 54
2 SEAT 48
3 Alfa Romeo 28
4 Chevrolet 26

Twenty points behind SEAT, and only two points ahead of Chevy? Yuck.

It was really sad to see Leon and Lacetti taking over Alfa (Eurosport did not show it, but it could be noticed as race standings were appearing lap from lap). Quite a disgrace for the Italian manufacturer.
