Can I assume you are in the USA? Having recently moved to the UK from Canada (same market for Alfas as the US) I would tend to agree with the Luxury tag for the 159. They look superb on the road and had me fooled when I over took one the other day. From the rear it looks very sporty, but overall it seems to be aimed at the luxury market, and it seems much bigger than the car it replaced. I would say it is too big to be competitive. In my mind there would be better platforms for Alfa to race. Do the regs rule out the Brera?

Yes, I'm in the USA (where WalMart is open 24 hours a day but you can't buy a new Alfa).
And, yes the 159 may be too big and fat for the WTCC, but dammit man, Alfa without an international factory racing effort would doom the mark. Too many nails and the coffin will be shut for good.
See this thread for homologation of the 159 and other Alfa/WTCC commentary:

The Brera, sadly, has only two doors.
I've stood over and peered into a 159, and I can say this: Alfa have raced bigger, fatter cars in the (then) ETCC. The 159 is a little bigger than the 156, but not much. It's actually a tad smaller than the 90, which is only a 100mm longer and 40mm taller than the GTV6 (which was raced back when you could have a coupé in the touring cars still).

I was unaware of the rule change that a car had to have 4 doors to run in the series. But I think the 147 GTA would be a better option, but what the hell do I know? It's the same size as the Seats that are ruling at the moment. Only negative report I read on the car is it was too powerful for FWD.

147GTA is also quite an old product in itself now - not really worth spending money for a race program on it. Besides, 147GTA only comes in the 3dr bodyshell itself.

147 GTA is no longer manufactured. 147 EAC GTA's were actually 2.0 16 valves with GTA body jobs.
I think N tech is doing a hell of a job with these old 156s.
BMW has the new E90's running, SEAT has all new cars...
The 156 is an almost 10 year old design!

Wow!
What a great day for Alfa Romeo! They were 1 and 2 in BOTH races (rounds 11 & 12) in Puebla, Mexico. Not too shabby for a team that was unsure if they would even race this year.

2 Augusto FARFUS (Alfa Romeo 156 )
3 Ryan SHARP (Honda Accord Euro R )
4 Tom CORONEL (SEAT Leon )
5 James THOMPSON (SEAT Leon )
6 Dirk MULLER (BMW 320si )
7 Gianni MORBIDELLI (Alfa Romeo 156 )
8 Rickard RYDELL (SEAT Leon )
Race 2:
1 Augusto FARFUS (Alfa Romeo 156 )
2 Gianni MORBIDELLI (Alfa Romeo 156 )
3 Rickard RYDELL (SEAT Leon )
4 Dirk MULLER (BMW 320si )
5 James THOMPSON (SEAT Leon )
6 Tom CORONEL (SEAT Leon )
7 Andy PRIAULX (BMW 320si )
8 Gabriele TARQUINI (SEAT Leon )
Point standings after 12 of 20 rounds:

Yeah, great races for Alfa team... They were really one step ahead of all the others!
The 156 basis is proving to be one hell of a chassis, staying competitive after all these years against much more recent machinery!
I dare to say that the 159 has a very heavy heritage and it aint gonna be easy to succeed the 156... even with the mentioned RWD 159 race car!
Go Farfus!!

There's no such plan: it has been dropped early this year. You know, Kalbfell, now fired/dismissed had said the 159 to be too much upscale as market positioning to be promoted through racing.
It's not yet known whether and how Alfa will compete next year.
It had been anticipated that 6 147s would be entered, 2 of them Diesels .
The announcing occasion should have been the Paris show, but instead nothing was announced, and it might no longer be sure.
