Component Questions for Racers

Morning,

As i wrap up the repair work on the chassis of my car..

"73 GTV buildup" in the GT section

..i need to get a few key parts on order to make sure the cage will properly encompass them. i.e....fuel cell, seat

For a seat, i'm thinking of a Kirkey, anyone run this seat? thoughts?

Kirkey Racing - Browse Products

For the cell, Fuel safe seems to be the best name around. so i think i'm gonna use the 10 gallon sportsman cell.

I think i'm gonna get the tilton petal setup from Spruell (or something similar)...but that's probably not critical for the cage at this point.

I'm not going to have a diagonal bar installed because i plan to have a pass. seat , or at least the possibility of one. i already promised my girlfriend the co-driver position haha. I want the door bars as low as possible..while being safe, and also with a bit of a kickout into the door area (i'll trim the doors to match). i'm 6'0", 200lbs...so i'll take any extra room i can get.

This is all a first for me, so i'm just looking for advice on pitfalls to avoid! Any other provisions i should watch out for during cage installation?

I know i could save a ton of money by buying a car that's already built..but building it is half the fun!

Kevin

One idea for the door bars is using the diagonal set up instead of the traditional NASCAR bars. To me, they look like they would be easier to get in and out of, since the middle point is a little lower. Perhaps you should find a local cage builder for other suggestions.

Not always. Still dealing with that now.

Components

Kevin,
Most sanctioning bodies want a head rest with a lowback seat and I prefer to have the head rest as part of the seat that way if you move the seat the headrest moves also.
Also be sure to mount your seat and be REALLY comfortable BEFORE you build your cage. On our first Lemons car we built the rollbar without making sure we all fit and I could not get the seat as far back as I would of liked. I always felt just a little to close to the steering wheel. When we built the next two cars we allowed alot more room.

all great points...i still gotta double check with the cage builder what parts he needs to accomodate the cage. i'm assuming he's gonna want the intended seat available as well.

Kevin, consider your seat a very important part of your safety equipment. Go with the high-back design. You definitely want to mount the seat (temporarily) before having the cage built. That way you can properly position the horizontal bar to which you mount your harness. You will also be able to make sure main hoop and door bars don't intrude on the space you need to control the car. You aren't nearly my size, but I had to modify the door bars on my car in order to mount my seat correctly and have room for my arms.

The Best Fuel cell company IMHO

I have used Aero Tech for fuel cells the last twenty years. My A/R engineer buddy said they were the best and would rant on their quality until my eyes glazed over. They made the cell in my GTA.

I think the seat position is critical. Not only for driver comfort/performance, buat also for the safety/regulations aspect. Hoop needs to be above the drivers hemet by a certain amount ( check regs now, not after), and seat belt crossbar location is mandated for correct angle. Really, the driver is the most important thing for hobby racers. Get it right then build the cage to suit your sanctioning body's regulations.

Lot of guys are now using the racetech seat on the vintage circuit. Your priorities should be fire, roll cage, hans device, seat&belts.

Another source for the fuel tank is ATL in the UK, they are 1 of only 2 I believe FIA mandated suppliers to F1.
