First: Try and track with a club (like BMWCCA) that will put an instructor in the car with you that can instruct and if necessary push you.
I do not believe that the telemetry will help much until you are already at or near the limit everywhere on track.
If you are not sure how far from the limit you are, you need more seat time and good instruction.
No amount of internet conversation or video clips can substitute for a good driver/instructor riding with you and explaining real-time where the speed you seek can be gained. That is why the BMWCCA puts so much emphasis on their instructor corp....

While I have to agree I cannot see why these things are not natural progression.
You will/should learn as you want to go faster, thus you should explore and try things and along the way you learn.
This is why go-karts produce the fastest drivers because it is easy and relatively safe to explore and go over the limits with a go-kart, and if you are eager and have the fire within you will learn and find the fastest line/way, etc.
If you cannot, or not hungry enough to push and learn yourself ... well please simply understand you will never, ever be as good as the guy that has that hunger ... no matter if you sit beside Michael Schumacher as your instructor for 20 years.
Instructors should be for small fine tips and suggestions maybe, but nothing substitutes the WANT to go faster and self exploration.

ps: When I used to club race I used to go down to the local indoor go-kart track with a mate, etc. and I was quite happy to do 40 laps all by myself ... never got bored as I was constantly refining. Note this was when I was like 18. As I got older I used to do test sessions and pick on a couple of corners of the track and carefully play with setting changes, but by then I'd already found the ragged edge.
I can guaranty that Michael Schumacher became as fast as he was by thousands and thousands of "boring" exploratory laps on his fathers go-kart track ... not sitting beside an instructor.
