I agree with you, Ed. The point system prior to the "Schumacher" adjustment might be a good first step. Or implementing the +1pt for Pole and +1pt for Fastest Lap (during the race) might be interesting.
Maybe the Silvers should be worth 50% of a Gold or something?

James, I'm with you completely.
The current 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 points system yields only a 25% 'premium' for taking first instead of second. By contrast, the original system awarded points for first through sixth as 9-6-4-3-2-1. That meant 50% more for first than second; how much more of a premium than that do you need for a win? Let's just return to that system.
And if Bernie wants drivers to push every lap, I'd have no problem with a 'pole point' and a 'fastest race lap' point. But the hell with this 'medals' nonsense. Playing the national anthem on the podium doesn't make it the Olympics...

Exactly my thoughts, Ed. I really think there'd be some benefit to the 'fastest race lap' point. That could create a push from all the top drivers near the end of the race, even if someone has, through strategy or speed, established a lead that is considered insurmountable.

Honda are pulling out of F1. Very very strong rumours around tonight that they have put the team on 3 months notice. If no buyer found then closed. A quick chat to a source of mine confirms that the second wind tunnel has been shut down, no night shifts etc.

Looks like it's serious business: Autosport. Shocking if Brawn, Jenson and Rubens would be out of a job all of a sudden...

THis is pretty Huge! I wonder if they might at least consider being an engine supplier.?.? Are they thinking they may have to spend money to ramp up road car manufacturing and facilities if GM faulters.?.?

From what I've been reading, no engines. If someone buys the Honda Team, they will have to run Ferrari engines. (They have the excess capacity)

Definitely lots of cost cutting. Corporate sponsorship is going to be way down this year, for all the obvious reasons, and a lot of teams are going to be feeling the pinch.

It may be a good adjustment to F1.?.? In a sence... it seemed to be getting too expensive therfore too commercial/corporate... tending to take the character out of the sport. It would be kind of nice to see the days of less manufatures and more privateer teams with engine suppliers that can be competative. Plus... i do not think Bernie helped things buy taking full advantage of the spending years and charging venues way to much to hold a race and giving less to the teams.?.? Just my opinion and thoughts... trying to be optomistic in these times.

I'd love to see them return to the days where someone like Rob Walker could buy a chassis from one company and an engine from another. Unless they've changed the rules, each team has to design and build their own chassis now.

How long has that been in effect... the rule that each team has to build their own chassis? In F1, i thought that had always been the case... except for back inthe days when ferrari were actually using Alfas or Mazeratis.
WOuld be good to see teams such as Layton House, Jordan, Liege, etc. again... with there various engine suppliers.

I don't know. Certainly there were a lot of "private entrants" in the 60s. Most bought a car from one of the factories (Lotus, Cooper, BRM or ??), sometimes it was the previous years car. Usually it would have the same engine as the factory car, but it didn't have to.
