I thought that i read new regulations regarding the cars for 2009 that, aside from slicks, all the winglets will be removed, front wings will be wider and lower, rear wing will be narrower but a bit higher and rear defusers will start at the center of the rear wheel... making the cars look and drive more along the lines of the cars of the late nineties.?.? Has anyone else read these regs?

David, it was a BMW mechanic who was shocked, and Red Bull had an electrical fire in one of their development labs while working on KERS. I'm a bit worried by the whole thing. I'd hate to see races ruined through the FIA rushing to implement some politically motivated 'green' technology before it is ready.

Ahh....thanks James. I knew I had heard about the accident, but I was totally unsure of what team was involved. Thanks for the clarification.
And regarding all of the "winglets and such", I do recall it being said that "the cars will look quite different next year". Cannot wait to see...it's a long time until March!

KERS is not mandatory. Toyota has said they will not have it on the car at the 1st Grand Prix.

"World Motor Sport Council - Decisions 05/11/2008
"The World Motor Sport Council met in Paris on 5 November 2008. The following decisions were taken:
"FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
"From 2009, engine life will be extended from two to three races.
"During the 2008 season a review took place of the stewarding arrangements in F1. The current panel of stewards consists of two international stewards and one national steward, all of whom must be eligible for the FIA’s super licence. For 2009, the following updates will be made:
"- Any national steward participating who is officiating for the first time will be required to ‘observe’ a minimum of one Grand Prix prior to their event.
"- At five Grands Prix in 2009, a number of trainee Stewards, nominated by their ASN and selected by the FIA, will be invited to attend.
"- Before each Grand Prix, a short CV of each steward will be posted on the FIA website.
"- With the benefit of a new replay system available to the stewards, all incidents will be investigated and appropriate action taken during the race, unless it is essential to seek further evidence afterwards.
"- Following the race, a short written explanation of steward’s decisions will be published on the FIA website. This will supplement the formal steward’s decision which largely defines the breach of the rules.
"- Where appropriate, additional film evidence that the public may not have seen but which was reviewed by the stewards, will be made available on both the FIA and FOM websites. "Note: No former driver is excluded from seeking their ASN national stewarding licence and then, as with all of the existing stewards, if they gain the necessary level of experience in stewarding events at a national, regional and international level the FIA can consider them for a steward’s super licence."
So, we'll have some 'trainee' stewards, a first-time national steward will have to have 'observed' at least one GP, and before each race a short curriculum vitae of each steward will be posted on the FIA web site. And they get to watch video replays. That should take care of it...
And here's the 2009 calendar:
29 March - Australia
5 April - Malaysia
19 April - China
26 April - Bahrain
10 May - Spain
24 May - Monaco
7 June - Turkey
21 June - Great Britain
12 July - Germany
26 July - Hungary
23 August - Europe (Valencia)
30 August - Belgium
13 September - Italy
27 September - Singapore
4 October - Japan
18 October - Brazil
1 November - Abu Dhabi
No France; no Canada; no US. Next year's season-ending last-corner thriller could be in Abu Dhabi.

It is a disturbing trend! I'm all for more races in places other than Western Europe, but I'm very disappointed that there will be no North American race in 2009. However, the negotiations regarding a renewed Canadian and a new US GP are ongoing. I would also love to see a Mexican GP added!
Want some worse news? It looks like NASCAR may expand internationally!

LOL!!!! I heard that! But you have to admit... they put on a good show. I'm also speaking of the talkshow portions of the race week-end... when the drivers are also in the chairs speaking. THey are all pretty open and openly speak of techniques used by the drivers during close drivng on the oval tracks. And... there are pretty funny. THey have created a Fun atmosphere for the fan. THey are not nearly as closed (Not the exact word i was looking for) as F1 drivers.

We can always bring back the Swiss GP--convenient to Bernie's bank accounts...

NICE!!! I especially love your selection of St. Jovite (Mont Tremblant) as the Canadian track! CanAm and TransAm races were superb there!

It might be a problem getting heat in the tires! It's not typical, but at that time of year there could be snow on the ground.
