Oil pressure sensor, 3 litre
Hi Everyone,
Just a quick question. My oil pressure sensor is leaking like a tap now. I have a spare, does anyone know the trick to removing it? I've tried, but i cant get a tool in there, theres no space to turn a spanner or anything. Its a 3 litre, so im refering to the sensor in the back of the V.
Thanks,
Brian

Note that there are two oil pressure senders back there: one for the gauge and one for the warning light. Anyway, a stubby wrench or an open ended crowfoot will do the trick. The one for the gauge (the bulky looking one) is probably the one you are referring to.

Thanks for the quick response.
I tried with an open ended wrench that has been bent to a right angle as there isnt enough clearance between the bulb sensor and the firewall(yeah, i was refering to the sensor for the guage) . I'll give it another go in the morning when the engine is nice and cool.

put a rag around both senders and start it.(one rag for each)
I had this once and it turned out to be the easy to change light sender. but it was spraying a super fine mist/jet of oil on to the guage sender making it look like that sender was leaking.

Hi Slyalfa,
Thanks for the suggestion, I remember you telling us about that a while ago(or someone with the same issue) The oil is pooling up in the V forward of the sensor so im prety sure its the guage unit. but i will check the switch just to be safe. It's actually developed quite a bad leak. it drips down the back onto the exhaust, then smokes up and comes through the fan inlet into the cabin. I actually have felt a bit sick after a long drive. Anyway, i have exams at the moment so i dont have much time to play.
On another topic, has anyone tried cleaning the headlight earths? does it improve the headlight brightness? I will clean the reflector and glass next week but i dont think it will help much.
Thanks again.

Cleaning grounds can't hurt. I'm not sure what the situation was in Australia, but early US 75s did not have relays on the headlight circuits. There was a recall to add a relay, but only on the low beams. Basically this had the effect of making the lows brighter than the highs.
I added a relay to the highs and got MUCH better brightness out of them. If you do not have relays it is an extremely worthwhile modification.

I have 2 relays on the drivers side and three on the passenger. (the sides would be opposite for you guys), Im not sure which one is the headlight but i think it is one of them. It is an '88 3 litre. the headlights are rubbish on low. I'll clean or replace the ground connections in the near future and check out the wiring diagram for the relay. Other than that though, what are my options for getting them a bit better?

G'Day Brian,
The two relays on the RHS are A/C and Radiator fan, on the left are horn, headlight washer timer and something else (yeah I don't remember everything).
Headlight relays if fitted may be in or behind the fuse box, can you hear a click when turning the lights on/off?
Otherwise I think Monty (HitAnApex) did a write-up on fitting relays.

hi Craig.
A while ago I had an issue with the headlights. when I turned them on I had a buzzing sort of noise that i think came from that area and it was blowing the fuse repeatedly. So i think the relay is in there but I will check. I ended up replacing the stalk then finding out it was a ground. I'll check the relay, do the cleaning and the grounds.
Thanks again everyone.

my "special " tool:
15 minutes to make the tool, 5 minutes to change the sender
one word of advice: be carefull when screwing the new sender on the alloy engine block

one other thing. the new one and the old one may have different size hex on them.
this got me stuck as I did not notice and I could not figure why I could not get the wrench on.
