spent a good part of the day switching out a door. and once again i'm baffled at how difficult of a car this thing is to work on. and although i'm no mechanic, i've been working on vw's and porsches since i could drive, so a good 25 years now. italian cars are definitely a different animal, that's for sure.

anyways, here's some pics of my ghetto door. all the more reason for a flat black spray can job i've been thinking about. anyone have any pics of a flat black (or any flat paint for that matter) milano?

first, here's the reason i swapped out the door. my milano came with a beat up door and a mangled door handle. i found some door handles at the local pick a part and the guy who sold me the engine gave a door he had lying around.

of course it doesn't match.

and here's my beloved work area looking white trash right now--ya know it's really hard to have a bunch of cars in various states of being worked on without it looking WT! oh, well, at least they're italian!

and a gratuitous shot of my alfetta. it runs and everything's there except the smog parts so i've been letting it hibernate.

and here's my view of my car empire which i'll be losing soon since i have to move. i can look out my window and see my alfetta, milano, & 944 turbo (under the orange tree.) the scirocco's on the street so it's not included. i'm so bummed about the move as this is 1 in a million house out here in LA (the owners sold the house out from under us). it's nearly impossible to find somewhere to house a bunch of cars which aren't registered and work on them. oh, well, everything has to change, i guess, but i'm going to miss it. at least it's forcing me to get the milano back together.

still not sure if i'll even put the engine back in before i move. maybe i'll take it as it is, except i have to bolt the transmission back to the body and some other stuff. the engine just has so many things that seem simple enough only to drag on when i try to get it accomplished, what i call the "italian syndrome." i'm running out of time quick & i hate to rush the engine only to regret it later on. i dunno what to do as it's such a mess right now. oh, well, we'll see.

more to come . . . .

yeah, you're not kidding! i've been worried about that for a while now as it's been leaning & leaning ever so slightly more as time clicks on and it's just a matter of time.

so the milano is back on 4 wheels for the first time in 2 years, has the hood back on and it's washed & clean! ok, so it's still a car only a mother could love but it looks a lot better and i can almost hear it revving. which is a good thing since i decided to bolt everything back on in order to tow it and just leave the engine uninstalled for now.

one quick question about valve adjustment though: do the cams always have to be removed for valve adjustment/changing shims? that's what the service manual says, of course, but just wondering if there are any tools for adjusting with the cams still installed like other cars? also, can the cams or specifically the cam pulleys be removed with ordinary tools or do i need the special alfa tools? thanks, thanks.

ex valves you can do easy instaled. but the in side needs to have the cam pulled like the 4cyl. but they also stay in check for ever like the 4cyl.

I have not needed any strange tools. a good wheel puller and the normal stuff.
there is 2 type of cam pullys. the old types let you pull the cam and keep the belt on. the newer types you have to remove the belt.

When you have time, check the clearances for intakes and exhausts. You might only have to adjust the exhaust valves, they get out of wack much more often than the intakes. If that's the case, you don't need to pull the cams to adjust the exhaust valves?

By the way, have you heard an Alfa v6 rev? If it's your first time hearing or driving a 2.5 liter Alfa V6, you're in for a treat!

i checked them quickly and it seems that they are all pretty much in need of adjustment. i'll have to check again to make sure.

and, yup, i've heard the alfa V6 rev. it is a pretty incredible engine. my brother has the a milano which ate the valves about 10 years ago and it's still awaiting its rebuild. (i guess it runs in the family!)

i still have that engine's sound embedded in my memory and can not wait to get mine running again. i'm also curious to hear the engine without the mufflers so maybe i'll give it a spin with open exhaust when putting it back together. what's it sound like with no mufflers?
