Speedometer not working?

The speedometer in my 87 milano gold stopped working today, and the needle is pegged all the way past 140 mph. Any suggestions of how to fix it? I dont really know anything about electric gauges other than they seem to work rather poorly in most cars more than a few years old (at least I can see why alfa had to use an electric speedomenter though, that would be a looong cable. ) lol

does the needle ever drop back to zero?...if not try opeing it up and bringing it back to zero..ive seen "other" brand speedo's get a volt spike and get stuck beyond normal travel

if it is droping back to zero id bet your jaeger box is shot or the speedo itself

Well, mine has stuck at zero a few times. The repair procedure is to kinetically actuate the mechanism via the modulated application of accelerated mass to the anterior surface.

Or to put it another way, I give the top of the dash a good, solid thump while I'm driving. Works every time.

No idea if this will help with the stuck at 140 issue, but I doubt it'll hurt.

This has happened to my car twice. Both times the needle got stuck and wouldn't budge after a few dashboard thumps. Took the cluster out and took it to a tach shop and they were able to clean it up, solder a few points and get it working again. Ran for about another 70,000 miles and it quit again...now I just have to pull the dash apart and take it in again. Only difference is the first time the odometer still worked, this time it's not working. Don't know if that means anything...but we did check the cable from the tranny and it's working fine so its not that. Hope this helps to know it's not just you that's having the problem.

Im guessing on mine either the needle is stuck, or something in the gauge cluter broke, becasue the odometer still works. I guess I either need to find another gauge cluster or have this one fixed (or both). I was hoping it was just a bad sensor or something, but I found out that 1, you cant buy the sensors anymore, and 2, if the sensor is bad the odometer would quit too. So, does anyone have an extra gauge cluster they would sell me? lol I had to replace the gauge cluter several times in the last car I had, they were easy to get for $35 at the junkyard though.

My speedo has been intermittent since i bought the 75. Up until recently the smack on the dash was working. I took it out the other weekend and into a gauge shop. Turned out the motor on the speedo had fried itself. So they repaired thats and now all is good, Fixed a couple of dry soldier joints on the rev counter to because it became intermittent to with all the thumping, lol
Bloody annoying thing is now i have cracked the right header all the way through the first primary exhaust.
