Buying a 1986 75

Hi i have just found a alfa 75 2.5 V6. Im very interested in buying it however there are two problems.

1) the gearbox makes a mechanical grinding noise in reverse and only in reverse any ideas?

2) the gearstick seems quite loose, possibly because of loose linkages?

If anyone could help out that would be fantastic.

If it grinds going into reverse its fairly normal, this happens to most cars of this age, if its grinding while in reverse constantly it something more serious perhaps.

The gearstick in a 75 is normally also loose by this age, the linkage just needs to be rebuilt. Have you been able to compare this to another 75?

The gearbox makes a consistent knocking noise while in reverse. I can source another box if it decides to explode however.

I have managed to compare to another 75, it was much tighter, nicer change. I will go over the linkage before i buy the car.

Thanks

knocking noise sounds like a tooth is busted off. I would plan on a new box.
when I changed my box the shifting slop was 2 things. the forward/back play and some side to side was the part that goes on the rod coming out the box. I just had to get a new used one. the 2nd problem was the 2 ball links for the left-right movment. the balls were super lose. I took them to a vice with the bolt side down and pownded on it with a hammer while rotating it to squish it evenly. untill there was no more play in the balls.
I also greased them with some nice syn-greas. now my shifter is very tight feels like it goes right into the box.
The spider feels loser with the long shifter now.
