I had a problem with my Verde cutting out and then starting up again almost immediately. I first had to figure out if it was ignition or fuel.
Step 1. I confirmed that the tachometer was still working as the car slowed when the engine had cut. This told me that the ignition system up to the coil were fine. I swapped in a new coil, distributor cap and rotor because they were inexpensive and hard to test. I still had the problem.
It could have been the coolant sensor going bad so I faked it out with a fixed resistor. I also jumped from the fuel pump wire to the wire that brings 12 volts to the combination relay. The car did not cut out now but it ran rough due to the fixed resistor in place of the coolant sensor.
I put the coolant sensor back in circuit and the car still did not cut out.
Now I removed the wire that jumped to the fuel pump and added the jumper for the AFM switch. The car still ran fine which proved that the problem was in the coil circuit of the relay.
Finally, I removed the AFM switch jumper and the problem returned. That proved the AFM switch.
If jumping the fuel pump circuit had not fixed the problem then I would have started looking into the fuel injection system.
