Spark plug wire keep popping out

Started up the car today, '88 Verde, and for some reason the #6 cylinder spark plug boot keeps popping up, tried pushing down, but it keeps popping, and air/vacuum seems to be popping out. What gives?

Thanks,

Leo

Give it a squirt with some silicone spray, that'll help it slide into place and also helps keep out moisture.

It sounds like you have compression leaking past the spark plug threads. Are the plugs correctly tightened?

Sometimes the retainer spring/clip gets tired and doesn't hold-on well. I'd pull that plug and make sure the little nipple doohickey is on the plug tight (and not installed backwards). While it's out, insert onto wire and see if it clips tightly enough, if no - look inside end of the wire lead and see if there's damage to the clip.

For the vacuum line, cut a 1/4" off the end (providing you have enough slack) and re-insert - if this doesn't work, use a small thing nylon cable tie (1/16"w) to secure it on there tightly.

There also a vacuum line coming from the spark plug hole?

Might have to check for wear on the spark plug, assuming everything is correct since had the car like this for 3 years and never had this problem. but you never know.

What do you mean here? Vac leak? Do you have a bad rubber seal between valve cover and head for spark plug well or do you have a plug leaking compression at gasket crush washer or porcelain loose in Hex end of plug?

well the spark plug boot, the part that rests on top of the valve cover keeps popping up and down while the engine is running, when i try to hold it down, I hear air coming out, I'm assuming it is the air that keeps pushing it up....does that mean the spark plug is damaged?

Remove wire from plug well and check for loose sparkplug. Sounds like plug loose. Do it quick before you blow out plug and threads in head.

Geez coppcarz, Sounded like you were describing two different problems in the original post! Spark plug lead popping off & the plenum vacuum hose coming off.

Yeah, compression stroke. I think it's safe to say you got problems. Has it occurred to you to pull that plug and take a look down there? Hope you didn't go and strip your plug hole threads... These engines have special alloy heads & are very soft. When replacing the plug, apply some anti-seize and start the plug by hand, making sure not to cross-thread it - before you even think about putting the ratchet on there! When tight by hand, apply the ratchet and give 1/4 turn (for spark plugs with compression-style washer). Or, better yet, use a torque wrench http://www.centerlinealfa.com/tips/i...rque_chart.pdf.

Good luck & hope the worst is not the case,

I'm hoping it's a loose spark plug, was hard to tell because it was at night, and I don't have the car at home. How deep inside the head is the plus located?

When I say "start by hand", I mean with the plug in the spark plug socket with a 6" extension on that. You'll need a 13/16" spark plug socket (1/2" drive methinks). If you don't have the Alfa spark plug tool, you'll need a universal joint and another 4" extension as well.

Don't think too much about it right now. Just bring your tools. BTW - some say don't use anti-seize, but use oil instead. I change my plugs every year, so I use anti-seize (sparingly).

Number 6 plug hole hidden pretty much by brake master cyllinder so use a 13/16" spark plug socket in 3/8" drive with 3" extension and possibly a 3/8" universal joint. If your Verde still has ABS brake system master cylinder/reservoir will be different looking than set up in pictures as this is from a Milano Gold edition. Maybe more or less clearance to get to #6 plug.

Either way it is a tight spot to work in.
