Thanks both of you.
I wasnt sure which Alfas had 4 cams, now I know!
Tango, what color is it? How long has he had it? And most important, how hard is he advertising it, and how long will he have it.
Would it make a trip from there to Ohio?

Despite me owning a Verde, for the ultimate project, I would actulal go with a GTV6.

They have a cool vintage feel, seem to have more chassis regidity, and have a more sporty feel being a coupe.

I'm sticking with Milanos because nothing makes more happy than blowing away an FD at the auto cross with my 4 door "alpha romero".

But yeah, don't discount GTV6's, they're a whole nother animal.

OldSchool, the Verde is grey and I'm pretty sure it would make Ohio. It's had T-belt and water pump and brakes done recently, the guy flipping it has only had it month and it's on Ebay now. It was owned by a guy who moved to Denver and my friend sold it for him. It's real clean and if I wasn't so pissed for not getting it at $1500 I'd buy it for $2100. He told me he'd go $2300, no lower. He's had it on Ebay three times since I think he's had people back out because of the salvage title.

As others have pointed out, only the last two years of the 164's came with the quadcam motor. Many of us have opted to build our own quadcam Milanos by buying a cheapie Milano, and replacing the original motor with a quadcam from the 164.

I lived with a 2.5V6 Milano for eight years before I "graduated" to a Verde. That was a lovely engine ... and I started my track day stints with that car. I didn't have Verde money then, and upon reflection it's best to keep as much of that $5K that you are budgeting to repairs and deferred maintenance (see comment above about the cars being two decades old). There's nothing more frustrating when you've spent your wad on the car, and have nothing left to fix the next broken thing .... which inevitably happens with old cars

Thanks Nizam. I guess the best thing to do, for me is this.
Buy a cheaper 2.5 Milano, prefer the platinum. If I could get one for 3500 or less (as it appears I can) I can save money away for maitence. I am going to college, and I am inclinded enough to do repairs myself. I could toy with this motor a little bit, maybe a homemade turbo setup (I am quite good at this lol) and drive it for a while, and eventually make it an all out track car, and buy a verde, or just swap in a 4 cam and build myself something retarded.
Thanks, I feel that I have a good battle plan now. I was lost, and now I am found.
Tell me what you guys think of this idea.

everything ive read up to this point states that its TQ that you have to worry about not HP..keep the torque down and in theory you could work around the transaxle weakness..SC 'ed is the way to go

Torque is all the fun though
I am not a SC fan, I am an extremist, and I beg to be different lol. Turbo setup FTW!
If the transaxle becomes a big issue, I have friends that can do some insane driveline work, and I will be able to short enough, so I will know how to do some kind of swap before it becomes an issue.
I got into Alfas because they are different. I love them, and they are not common. I have only seen 2 Alfas in person ever.
A 164S in Michigan
A spider grad in ohio
Not trying to sound funny, or cocky in any way, but I like Alfas because they are more challenging. I love to learn, and be with a group of enthusiast that are like me. I like to build cars that not everyone builds, because they dont know about them, or do not have the know how to do so. I have worked with BMWs and Mitsu 2.0s very extensively, and have had some extremely fast turbo awd mitsus. I really want to have some fun, learn some stuff (I have learned quite a bit in my short time being here) and have a quick car.

I've got a Milano 2.5 I'm selling for $1200.
Since, you are going to mod it anyway, it might be a good try with my car.
Here's the link...

Have a look .

Regarding forced induction, the Milano is a much better platform than the GTV6. There is a lot more room under the hood to fit turbo(s), supercharger(s), piping etc. I like the GTV6 better subjectively, but there is no question the Milano is better. I would also argue that the 2.5 is just as good as the 3.0 because, again, they both have the same transaxle limit.

Greg

Thanks Greg. I appreciate the input.
I guess Milano it is for me. It is cheaper, and I still LOVE Milanos. I shall get a Spider after college I supose.
I am pretty stoked, I would like to get Nokus Milano. I will have to see what happens. My current situation makes it tough.

Well this sounds familiar! About 4 Alfa's deep right now and dont even mind. Still in University somehow managing it.
From what I can tell you, in my experience...

If you get a 2.5 you'll have a lot of fun revving it, and wont speed 'as' much as the 3.0
I like the 3.0 best, but it doesnt sound nearly as good, and it really wakes up once you swap in the platinum differential. You'll like the really long fifth gear though, great for highway cruising.
In comparison to my milano, my spider is completely gutless. You have to work hard to make it go fast. But they are a very fun car regardless. The spider tells you that you dont need to have lots of power to still be fast in an autocross, handling is great, but then so is the milano's handling.

Looks like you're on the right path to having the Alfa bug though!

Gearboxs can take big power

Hey old school, I'm beginning to wonder if the gearbox power thing is a bit of a myth, There was a guy here in christchurch, New Zealand that ran a a track gtv with an all alloy small block chev developing alot more torque and hp than 400, he did manage to kill a couple boxs and yes was using the original transaxle. In the end he put a spray bar in the box to keep the bearings oiled and after that had no dramas for atleast the couple of season he ran the car.

These older Alfas are pretty frustrating though if you're looking for big horsepower. You will need to budget much more of your money towards maintenance than your typical tuner car, from what I've seen.

With an E30, you only need to replace the usual items, rubber mounts, a wheel bearing here, a drive shaft donut there....and even then, that's when the car has 180K miles.

The Milano, is going to need synchros replaced pretty often, drive shaft donut replaced every 60K miles with spirited driving, window swithes that go bad, steering column switches that don't last 80K miles, ripping fabric, weak arm rests, the list go on. Don't take me wrong, I love these cars, but they are FRAGILE. These are NOT cars you can beat on, at least without paying a lot to replace all kinds of items. It's fun to be different, but this Alfa trip is a whole nother form of different. All I'm saying is that at a minimum, budget for a lot of maintenance items, both now and later down the road.

I believe a spider would be more simple to maintain, but would be a hoot with just 180hp.

These cars are about finesse, I would be plenty happy with a hot 24V swap. Get roudy with lots of torque, and watch things break...

Greg Gordon has gotten great results, and he will know much more about this than I, but I've noticed that the harder I pushed my Milano, the more things I had to worry about.

Also, the Milano chassis is FLIMSY! A cage would go a long way, but with out one...
So yeah, fun cars, just try to find out what you're getting into. They're hard enough to keep up to spec when they're dead stock!

Nizam,

I agree you'll pick on me, as well as others on the BB ( I still can't believe Louis called me a WANKER!!!) but what did that have to do with euro's post? I'm lost XD
PS, you excited for Buttonwillow or what??
