Leaky Transmission

So I believe I am loosing fluid from the gearbox differential with periodic leaking to the point that I think things are going dry with the stick shif. So it is time to add gearbox differential fluid. (Milano Verde stick)

1. Does anyone know what the best kind of differential fluid would be to use and what additive could be used to help stop the leak???

2. Also the manual appears to be simple for removal of the drain plug and refilling on the filler plug. Is this that simple or any other recommendations for service to replace fluid?

Personal, I like Redline 75w90 NS, I use it in all my alfas with good results. Yes, it is that easy, but have some sort of hand pump to get it in thye fill hole, no way to pour it in unless you have a really long hose... As far as leaks, where is it leaking from? There are 3 seals in the front, then two seals, one around where each axle goes into the dif.

The leak appears to be coming from where the main bolts to the gear casing make a connection. This is the main connection and speaking to a local Alfa Mechanic, he says that even if there was a complete overhaul done, there is still a potential for leak because there is no gasket at that this location and it is metal-to-metal contact.

I have put a few transaxles together and I always use a sealant for the connection, once I was on a hurry and did not get it spread evenly or completely and ended up with a leak, but if you spread it well, you will not have a leak. And with the one that leaked, I tried everything to get it to stop, and no luck, you basically have to take it apart and and clean and re-seal it. I know that is not the answer you are looking for, but you might try to snugg up all the bolts you can get to and see if that slows it down.

Thanks Sam,

I will try the bolt tightening first. Is Redline 75w90 NS easily available at AutoZone or other local parts stores? How many quarts should I buy?

Nope, you will need to order it from one of the Alfa places or try Summit Racing, if you are going for a complete change, I would order 3 qts, and stop by one of the normal auto parts places and get the big suction gun and use it to fill the transaxle, I have found it to be the easiest to use to fill it.

I'll third the NS and ...

I've got a great source here in NC. They will ship to you anywhere, and my last purchase was under $7 per quart for 75w90 NS!!! Even after shipping, that is hard to beat.

I believe both portions of the case holds 3.5 (2.5 and 1.0) and when you add in the inevitable spills, 4 qts should be enough.

PM for the details.
