Front wheel hub nut size?

Anyone know the size of the nut on the front wheel hub? I'm changing rotors soon and want to make sure I have all the tools lined up beforehand. Also the approximate length of the appropriate cotter pins.

Thanks.

I don't think you need to worry about it too much, they are not really all that tight, I think you could use an adjustable wrench with no problem, I would be more helpful but I swapped them out for the Mercedes Pinch bolts years ago.

If I used a adjustable wrench on a nut where I should be using a socket, I'd have to kick my own butt on general principle Besides, I need the socket to use with my torque wrench to properly set the bearing preload.

I did find my big bag o' cotter pins, though, so that part is good. Just would be nice to have the socket in hand before I start taking things apart.

Use English wrenches on an Alpha? Blasphemy!

What's the torque spec for the nut in furlong-pennyweights?

I don't think there is a torque spec for it. I just did it up till the bearings felt right and put the split pin in.

Seasons greetings!

Actually, there's a pretty specific preload procedure for the bearings in the manual. No idea how critical it is, but I plan on following it.

You have a part number for the Mercedes application? This is a nice upgrade, as the 911's have as well. Always appreciated the precision. Thanks.

I don't have a part number, pulled some(many) from "Pull-a-part" from some older Mercedes (I think late 70's early 80's 2XX models). I think I still have stash of them in the shed, if you want a pair, I can see if I can find my bag, you can PM about postage. You will also need an extra set of washers so you can get an allen wrench around the lip of the hub, also need to grind just a touch off the allen bolt so the dust cover fits back on.

Always make the bearing loose though, not good.

I actually put the wheel back on and turn the nut until I can't feel any play in the bearing. Then install the split pin (you might wanna take the wheel back off first.).
