Air Intake

I going to be building a custom air intake to get as many benefits from the MegaSquirt system as possible. So to do this I would like to enlarge the pipe between the air flow meter and the throttle body. So what I then need to know is, what to do with all the pipes that connect to it? Do I try to incorporate them onto the new bigger pipe? Does it matter at what point they join the piping? Does anybody know what they do, oil returns I suppose without taking a very good look?

I have bought a 3" Apexi Power Intake that should hopefully be able to take the power. According to testing it has better filtration and flow rates than a K&N equivalent. It also only needs to be cleaned under the tap not with petrol like the oil primed/impregnated ones need to be.

Thanks,
Simon

I don't get it, you are converting to MS but you're going to keep the AFM?

Why??

I can see there must be some confusion here. I am scrapping the AFM, it is the main reason for the MS mod. I just used the AFM as a reference to describe the piping that I wished to remove in the vain hope I would discover what all the other connecting pipes did and what to do with them.

I have attached a PDF from the workshop manual. What I would like to know is what to do with them when I build the new 4" piping? Could I bring them all together as one and attach them to the new pipe or filter box? Or bring them all together and fit a small cone filter on the end?

Just remember to

isolate the cone filter from the rest of the engine bay. Hot engine air is less dense than cooler outside air, and therefore you'll have fewer oxygen molecules to mix with fuel. Less oxygen means less power. You also need to be concerned with fan wash causing strange secondary intake pulses at certain engine rpms.

I run a cone filter for the sounds that it makes, but when I want real power, I put the stock airbox back on with a K&N flat filter inside.

Yeah I was thinking I would fabricate a box for it to sit in and make duct to the front of the engine bay.

If you're going to put it in a box I suggest getting a filter with larger filter area.

I'm actually looking at making a box for fitting a large paper filter because the cone-style filters have so small filter area. It's difficult to find room under the hood though.
