If I may add to this. It could have been the extreme EGTs of the rotary that killed the cat. Rotaries operate at almost double the EGTs of a normal internal combustion engine. This may have been the cause of the premature failure.

I agree, you have to use special exhaust parts when equipped on a rotary. EGT means the temperature of the exhaust.
