ive got no complaints at the body style specificaly especialy if it was intended for "sedan" racing....but cant help but wonder how much slicker thru the air and faster it would have been on a gtv6/fetta coupe body(but probably not long enuf)..mmm gtv10

My camera battery was running out so I was only able to snap one shot, but got to check one of the procars out this past summer at the Alfa Museum in Arese, Italy. It was in a section of the museum not open to the public for some reason but what do you know, we made our way back there!

Actually looking at that link, those pictures are from the museum. The ones of the motor and the last one of the car from the rear are definitely there. The front corner of the car you see in my pic is the one with the black wing behind the motor on the website. Unfortunately the camera was totally dead and could not snap photos of that one. Oh well, it was the only one in there i missed.

its rather odd seeing a 164 belting around the track and sounding like a modern-day F1 car

The 164 probably has better C of D than the Alfetta coupe

Gianni Tonti and his V10 F1 engine which landed in the Procar.

Notice the similar stance as previously Carlo Chiti with journalist. Straight from the office, with suit and tie, into the dyno room to take credit for the creation. As I have learned Tonti was responsible for the 4cyl twin turbo F1 engine for Ligier and this V10 engine. Both engines never got any racing history. However there has been rumours that the V10 engine became the base of the Ferrari V10 F1 engines.

So what happened with Tonti? The Alfa Indycar V8 (89-91)seems to have been constructed by someone else, in house, even it was in the same period as the V10.

Hi,

the Alfa Indy car v8 was initially designed at Ferrari under the eyes of Enzo Ferrari as he wanted to enter the indy circuit in the US. After his death, Fiat came in and found the skunk works project. they shifted it to Alfa.

I have one of the engines in my garage that I want to make a table out of. If anyones interested, I can post pics of it. Its pretty cool. it was a development engine. some castings on it are wood for creating patterns to sand cast.

RAGs - cool thread, thanks for the link! Man, the last image of that 164 really makes the thing look like a funnycar for the 1/4 mile! Can you imagine 13K rpm

Lanciabill: I really dontīt think that the Alfa engine was the same as the Ferrari Indy project, well unless you or somebody can come forward with some convincing evidence of course. I was writing articles in our Alfa magazine here at that time, and remember that the team owner was sued and had to pay fines for lending Alfa a couple of Ilmor Chevrolet engines to scrutinize, so the Alfa engine was more similar to the Chevrolet engine than the special Ferrari construction. The only connection I have found to Ferrari is that the Alfa people used the Ferrari Indycar chassis as a testbed,with the Alfa engine, until the March chassis was ready.
However if you have evidence that the Alfa engine was the same as the Ferrari, please post that info. I have the Alfa press release from that time and there they claim its an inhouse construction.

Would be interested in photos of your engine also. I have some factory photos myself, and even some from racing track. Danny Sullivan even sent a signed photo of himself, in Alfa colours, to me

GV ... 13K RPM ? I'm not sure I can fathom that one, but that may well be par for the course.

As for the looks, well, I'm split. My original thought was that the TRUE rear wheel drive layout of the 75/milano might theoretically be more appropriate for the V10 driveline (and purists perceptions ). To me, the use of the 164 shell (although probably appropriate for the manufacture timeframe) does make it look like a true funny car.

But I could buy the ALFETTISH's point on aerodynamics ...

In my quest for knowlege on this engine, I came upon an article about the indy car program at Alfa and how it was spawned from Ferrari in the mid 80's. I cant vouche for the source but it seemed plausible. could be just an urban legend Italia grande.....

the engine is pretty cool even if just a conversation piece. I dream of hooking up an aftermarket engine management system and fitting to my Milano.....

I am sure the drive line donuts would just LOOOOVE 800bhp.

pics of indy car engine

it looks like the SN is number 13. I am not sure how many they made. I have the headers in my basement. it is really wide with them on each cylinder bank. I dont have any of the intake plenum parts.
