Rebuilding AC Pump?

Hey guys

While fixing a leaky thermostat today I decided to also swap the AC Pump belt with a longer one (when the Bosch catalog says 13A850 they LIED). Installed a 13A875 (too long ). I'd like to shoot the Alfa designer that routed the lower radiator hose through the AC belt making you drain the coolant to replace it. Dork.

Anyway the AC system has been empty since I got the car back on the road. When I now try to turn the pump I can only do so with a ratchet. The Nippon Denso pumps I'm used to turn easy by hand, so does the Seiko-Seiki I have in the garage (Fiat Tempra). There is no oil in the pump so I'll put some in and try.

The pump is a Sanden SD-508 similar to the one in this link, but 5 pistons not 7.

The 164 SD-709 compressor "exploded" view

Does anyone know if you can rebuild these?

Richard

No oil and how long that way and if mositure has done a number on bearing(s), etc all unknowns. Did you take it out invert and drain to verify no oil?

If you add oil add ester oil not PAG and see if it turns easier. I replace compressor front crankshaft seal and clutch pulley bearings if compressor seems to turn easy as I can do those jobs without opening case.

SD-709 and this SD-508 compressor use same shaft seal.

As for home boy rebuilding without access to front cover seal and rear cover reed plate and gasket even if pistons and bearings are OK it would be a challenge.

Here in US they do rebuild them as I am sure they do in NZ and other countries.
