Steering quickener

Did some research tonight, and Howe Racing makes a couple of small quickeners that could be suitable for my application, especially the 1.5 to 1.0 ratio. But problem is that though the class rules allow a steering quickener, they do not allow any modification of steering column inside the car. Looks like there is not enough clearance between the firewall and the steering rack to fit a quickener and coupler.

Bill

Hi Bill,
I would NOT just cut the belt off and go autocrossing.

With my 15" rims and sticky tires, without that belt turning the wheel at low speeds was a joke and I would have been dead in the water at an autocross.

Simply removing the belt makes the steering quite heavy. I wouldn't do it.

Yep, that's what I was thinking--the inoperable pump would not let the pressure pass through, at least not very fast.

I have 245/35-18 Kumho V710 race tires on front, and they'd be really hard to turn fast at very low speeds, like we get when we have a course with a 180 degree pivot.

I'm betting the problem I've had is just a bit of the pump sucking air during cornering.

Not at all excited about pulling the rack to convert to manual. Would be easy if engine were pulled, but with headers there isn't much room from underneath....

Filling with grease

Ok is there a easy way to fill the rack with grease ie:god i do not want to take the rack out.

If i fill the bellows up with grease I wonder if enough greese will get past the ends of the rack. Im guesing not especially as the rack is desighned to seal in fluid.

What about pumping grease into the fluid ports?

Anyone?

Please try the Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak stuff. You can buy it at any good auto parts store. It is very thick stuff and I have had it in my Milano for about a Month now without any more leaking. It's definitely worth a try.
