Phil Mason at Phil's Foreign Car in Santa Cruz knows the V6's VERY well; he used to race a Giulietta Spider back in the 70's and was doing mods to V6's when GTV6's were new

His number is (831) 479-0544.

I'ver heard about him, we need to take the 81 spider to him because nobody knows that spica. Thanks for the info, as for parts, who stocks them for these cars. I've had poor luck going through the usual avenues like iap and centerline

I've had very good luck with Alfa Parts in Berkeley. They may be a bit more $ but I always get the stuff I want, usually the next day. They also stock some very hard to find parts (both for the I-4 and the V6). Can't beat that.

Alfa Parts in Berkeley: (510) 525-9435.

Yeah, I too have been going to Phil for years and literally live right down the street. Besides the V6, he also knows Spica better than anybody I have seen.

As for local parts, AlfaParts is great and we are lucky enough to have one of the biggest Alfa junkyards close with Alfa Parts Exchange (APE) in Tracy. APE isn't just used junk, Larry Jr. has modified and raced these V6s plenty and offers some "other" serviced too if you ask. http://www.apedirect.com/

Another often forgotten parts place I use is awesome. The DiFatta Bros back east. http://www.difatta.com/

okay so i just got a call from the the local bosch shop and they said that its gonna cost me at least a grand to fix this because he said it had aftermarket spark plugs and basically seemed to try to push language at me that he thought i wouldn't understand. Well thanks to you guys here I was able to tell him that lodge plugs aren't aftermarket and are infact the plugs recommended by alfa, and the his long pause was priceless. I guess i need to take it up to our friend in santa cruz and have it done right. He said he saw oil on the plugs and that was the one thing he said that worried me. Could this mean my cylinder rings are failing, becuase i thought i'd be able to feel that kind of compression loss.

Oil on the plugs in these V6's usually just means the plug hole-cam cover seal is failing. Nothing huge, I hear its what produces that 'Alfa' smell though.

Knowing these cars saves a lot of money on them. I dont think i'd have mine if I depended on shops

wow very true!! yeah i just got off the phone with phil and he was saying that it sounds like the valve guides may be failing which would explain the oil and having almost 200k on the clock makes sense. He also said I'd be surprised what a new set of plugs can do as well. So I'm gonna rely on the expert for this fix as I dont really wanna dive into a head change and rebuild.

Phil's the man. He's got colorful language, but I've been a satisfied customer for almost twenty years

Phil has the dirtiest, most disorganized shop I've ever seen. If he can work there, more power to him.

Phil only takes cash and check, so don't come carrying plastic! It's a long drive back over the hill.

Did any of the "shops"...

...do a leak-down test? That should give you an idea if its either the valves, rings--or neither. Keep in mind that your problem might even be something like a vacuum leak etc. Good luck,

Adam
