ABS accumulator

Hi,

today i received a fresh accumulator from my local alfa dealer. There was also a mounting instruction sheet attached:

1. unmount old accumulator
2. mount new accumulator
3. check fluid level in brake fluid reservoir
4. have a cool white beer

IMHO this would be too easy. Do you agree with this procedure, or do i also have to bleed the whole system.

Comments would be highly appreciated.

Well if noone replies, just throw it on yourself! hehe.

But in all seriousness, if you have fluid in the accumulator when you begin (can you bench bleed these suckers?) and you remove the old accumulator, then throw the new one on you shouldnt have any air bubbles, and if you did it'd be quite nominal.

And if that doesnt work then bleed the system.

I can vouch that you can throw on a new pump and not have to bleed the whole system.

if the old one even has a tiny bit of life it will spray break oil everywhere. even after stomping on it a lot of times with the key off.
1. stomp on and off the breaks a lot of times with the key off
2. wear safty eye grear.
3. wrap a rag around it as you undo it.

Careful with removing....

..the old one. As was noted in the previous post, wrap a rag around the threaded portion of the accumulator as you uscrew it (use a thick towel). There is likely to be a fair amount of pressure still. Step on the brakes beforehand a bunch of times, then do it again. Be sure to have a hose or bucket around when you do this to flush any brake fluid off of any paint you may get fluid on. When I did it there was a fine spray that went across my engine bay, onto my right fender then onto my buddy's Ferrari's hood.... We washed them down right away with water and there was no problem at all. Also, when removing the old accumulator, there is, as I recall, a hex fitting on the top and perhaps a fitting for a wrench near where the accumulator screws into the pump. Be sure to brace the pump well when unwrenching the accum. as its probably pretty tightly stuck on by now.

As for bleeding, you likely won't need to afterward, but depending upon when you last had a good bleed (which Forum is this...??), you might find this a good time to do one anyhow.

Good luck, and most of all, you ABS pump will thank you....

Last saturday i did the job - protected by a big towle and safety googles. I pumped 50 times the break pedal and when i removed the accumulator, there was absolutely no pressure on the system.

The good news is, while driving, the ABS light no longer comes up.
The bad news: over the night, the system looses whole pressure. In the morning after starting the engine, the pump runs now more 30 seconds to put back pressure in the accu.

Does anybody have an idea, where typically in the dynamic circuit the weak points are?

I think you may be ok. I seem to recall that when I had a new accumulator AND pump years ago, it also did that. In the morning it would run for a "while".

If you press the brake, let go, press the brake, let go, ... How many times can you press the brake inbetween the pump coming on?

speaking of the ABS accumulators, would someone have handy the GM part number for the Buick accumulator? Also the name of the GM supplier?

Here you go:

In the past I bought both pump and accumulator from AC-direct.com.

and Jason mapped the pin connectors if you like to use the new pressure switch that comes the GM unit instead of moving your old Alfa mpressure switch over:
