Do aftermarket headers replace cats?

Just wondering for SCCA reasons. Can't seem to find the right search terms.

If you're racing you can just skip the cat alltogether with or without headers.

Sorry. Looking at STS Solo, where headers are allowed, but altering the emissions controls is not. So, if you can install aftermarket headers without deleting or moving the stock Cat, then the header is legal.

Example: My Contour has one "pre-cat" for each bank, plus a main cat. Headers delete the pre-cats, so they are a no-go for that car unless I go to Street Prepared.

Most of the headers I've seen for Milanos skip cat but I suppose you could use a Y pipe then cat but I'm not sure how your class regs are on that.

Hi RogerB,

Looking at the 2007 SCCA Solo rule book, class STS:

"Exhaust manifolds and headers may be replaced with alternate units which are emissions-legal"....This allowance does not permit relocation of the catalytic convertor..."

My take on this is that you could use headers, but would need to connect to a stock Milano Cat. Further, I wonder if "Emissions-legal" means you would need a California CARB approval for the headers.

Whatever... get the car ready and join me at the Solo Nationals next fall. Topeka isn't that far from your location.

The old Shankle headers included a Y-pipe to be welded to the front of the stock catalytic convertor.

Most other headers, such as CSC, Vick's, and IAP do not include any provisions to use the original catalytic convertor but could easily be set up to use a cat by an exhaust shop.

Some areas are picky about the number of cats - i.e. it may not be legal (for smog or your racing/autocross class) to replace a single cat with duals, etc.

So, does the Milano just have the main cat? If it just has the one, then headers might be workable.

STS rules restrict you to the OEM cat(s) in their stock locations.

Again, on my Contour (which has 3 cats), my only allowance besides a cat-back is to alter the Y-pipe between the "pre-cats" and the "main."

Are the shankle headers dead? What about "SZ" headers, or is that the same thing?

Shankle headers were sold by AR Ricambi and may or may not still be available. They had several problems, such as ground clearance and flange sealing between the two halves. IMHO, CSC headers are a much better design overall and could be made to work with the original cat with some fabrication.

The "SZ" headers were and OEM part for the ES30 Alfa "SZ" and "RZ" cars of the early 90s. They are a bit different in that they are "shorty" headers that only replace the cast manifold and not the downpipes. You could easily fabricate a way to mate these to the OEM downpipes and cat. The main problem would be finding a set, they are no longer available through Alfa.

Joe
