Neat con rod cap puller tool
Hi gang,
Was having a little trouble pulling my con rod caps off and I really didn't want to resort to banging as of yet. The first thing I tried was to make a super magnet puller tool (see photo). I ordered a small / strong rare earth magnet (made of Neodymium-iron-boron for you crazy scientists!) Anyway, I made up a small T handle and threaded it to the magnet. I placed it onto the bottom (flat part) of the rod cap and pulled.....it did absolutely diddly squat. I tossed this and went to plan B. If plan B doesn't work, we're "going to the hammers" (i.e. "going to the mattresses" for all you Godfather fans out there!). Plan B was to use two 10-32 screws with nylon washers straddlinga 25mm long piece of Tygon tubing. I inserted the tubing / nylon washer end into the cap. Then I locked two nuts together towards the end of the machine screw. A third nut was held above the nylon washer on top of the con rod cap while the screw was tightened. This squished the tygon tube into the cap locking the machine screw in place. I then unlocked the nuts and placed a handle (aluminum bar stock I had laying around) onto the screws. Then pulled and bingo it worked like a charm!!
Well gotta get back to pulling the other 5 off.
see ya
