Well if is, then it is not a pump problem. The pump will just cause loss off boost. But if you never have used non boosted breaks it might seem so hard that is not moving at all. But if it is stuck where there is nothing then the master or the linkage must be jamed. Then that is a non ABS broblem but a normal problem. It was not clear to me if it was frozen or just hard. Any one who has never driven manuel breaks, it might seem frozen. I have seen this not only with a dead pump on the Alfa but when any one has used one of my old cars with out power breaks.

Ok, thanks guys. I'll do some more troubleshooting. I still couldn't find the fuse though. But, I hear it working, so obviously its fine.

Just a quick thought that could have been overlooked....is there sufficient brake fluid? (the pump fails far before the master cylinder stops working)

While you are troubleshooting, some questions regarding your first post:
Was the yellow ABS warning light on when you had the hard pedal?
When did the brakes come back to "normal"? Right away? Or did you let the car sit and cool down for a while? How long? Or do you still have a hard pedal?
Did you do anything unusual before the hard pedal (such as use the brakes excessively prior to the hard pedal)?

PS: The fusible link is located in a black, rectangular plastic "box" about two inches long, a half inch wide by a half inch tall mounted atop the driver's fender well, near the ignition coil. The top flips open to access the fuse link.

BTW I think the 87 does not have the link is has a fuse in the fuse box. I put in a auto reset breaker in mine when I had a bad pump that would jam time to time poping the fuse.
I think the fusible link came on the newer cars.

Hi, i am quite sure, that the layout didnīt change. Therefore you should have this fuse. It should look like in the attached jpg.

My one has gone because of vibrations

Another thing, you should be aware: if the power assist does not work, only the static circuit works, what means NO braking force on the rear wheels !!
