Manual Rack

I was curious as to what was was best for a manual steering rack. I have heard of running the rack on the GTV-6 but it is to short and the spline is not fat enough. Any ideas of what i can do? Help would be much appreciated. If you know of also a quicker ratio rack even better.

There is also a planetary gear device that you can weld into your steering column shaft. This can increase your steering ratio up to 2:1. I think there are 1 or 2 different rates that are available.

We thought about it on our race car, but since we have to drive it a significant amount on the street we decided against it. Highway driving would become extremely twitchy and with a manual rack, the steering effort doubles. If you tried to maintain power steering and install a 2-1 quickener, I imagine you would be battling pump catch. Not to mention that the install itself is a significant amount of work and requires butchering the steering column. These are mainly for oval dirt track cars where a large amount of steering angle change is required in a very short amount of time (pitching and counter-steering). Dirt race the Milano? Sweet.

I say convert the rack to manual. You won't notice much if any difference in steering effort above 5mph. The car will be lighter and easier to maintain.

What sort of grease do you use to re-pack the rack?

Cheers, Scott

Sorry to go off on a tangent here, but anyone done the opposite swap? IE a 75/Milano power steering rack and bits into a GTV6?

rack conversion

Or into an Alfetta? I bought a vandalized Milano a few years ago for the 5 lug hubs, the vented brakes, and to perhaps fit the power steering into the Alfetta so my wife might occasionally drive it. I changed jobs and have not had a spare moment to work on it but it would be nice if someone has already tried it and could fill me in.

Thanks,
Wayne

Some people have put the Milano rack into the earlier cars. It can be done but it's a lot of trouble. I have not done it.

Thanks Greg, when you say a lot of trouble, what do you mean?

I have a complete 75 which unfortunately I now am going to part out, so all the bits are there.
