Yep, been there three times.

It's pretty straightforward. The rack bolts right in. Get the brackets, pump, hoses and reservoir from the donor Milano/75. You will also need the Milano/75 steering column which will also bolt nicely into the GTV6.

Trouble? It's all relative. The last car we had this done to was my parents' GTV6. Things happen when you get older; traffic gets worse and you're ... well, older (and weaker). But their enthusiasm to keep driving their GTV6 continues to be strong so in went the power steering system.

I personally like it, and will continue to keep these PS systems running in all my cars. It cuts out bump steer very well. I think it's also the best-weighed system out there; yes, even compared with the newer "sports" and "sporting" cars.

But as this thread, and other similar threads on the 'BB will show you, it's a personal preference.

Greg, what grease did you use to pack the rack? Would oil work just as well? Some factory manual racks (non Alfa) take normal gear oil. Or maybe semi-fluid grease is a good in-between?

Has anybody tried to swap racks with the motor(V6) in the car? I've pulled the spare rack out of the parts car and I hope to swap it in when it's converted.

I used Mobil 1 synthetic grease for the steering rack. It's probably overkill, but it's what we stock in our shop. I wouldn't use oil for a manual rack, it won't work any better and it's more likely to leak.

It can be done with the engine in the car. Andrew Garcia has some method for doing it really fast. I have not done it with the motor in the car.

I have it is not too bad. The first thing to do before you start is get a can or 2 of the degreaser and spary everything that is oily/greasy (which seem like every thing down there) the let it set for a few then blast it. if you can use a Hi-PSI washer it would be good like and some do-it-yourself car washes.
removing the tires I think is a must for spraying the degreaser.

then after is is all clean you will be able to see the hidden bolts that were under the inches of dirt and grease. remove the window wash tank. take off the front wheels,take out the small bolt that clamps the steering wheel to the rack.
then slide that off the rack (I found this to be the hardest part as it can be stuck)
now undo the tie rods(when you unscrew the ends count how many turns it was threded in so when you put on the new one thred on the same count)
undo the 2 hoses (put buckit under as the ATF will come out)
undo the 4 bolts that hold the rack.
slide it out. (I slid mine out the drivers side)
slide in new one.
put in the 4 bolts
put on the 2 hoses
put on the sterring whell shaft (it needs to like up do the cut out will go where the bolt for the clamps go )
put in the clamp bolt. and washer tank
fill ps tank
and I think that is it.

Thanks Greg. The way I figure it, the rack seals with the ATF in it which is runny like water, so then almost anything would work. Do you know what sort of grease the Mob 1 is? I also found this website:

It's dealing with Honda racks but that shouldn't matter. They fill the rack with ATF, and they put a 'breather' in the balance line with a T. Sounds good in theory, but probably wouldn't work with grease.

Thanks Sly, at least I know it's possible now. Shouldn't be too dirty back there, we cleaned it 3 months ago when the motor was out. I wish I'd done this then, or at least before I filled the system!
