Driveshaft Off, and didn't need to lower transaxle!

Finally got the shaft off and the Haynes manual for the Alfetta showed a way to pry the rear guibo straight off without lowering the transaxle. I also loosened the center guibo and bearings. Success!!

The hard part is getting it back in w/o lowering the transaxle. On one Milano, I was able to do it, but on my Verde, I couldn't. Go figure.

Hi Murray,

I tried taking some digital pictures of the manual to email them as jpeg but the print was too snall to read. I'll try and scan the pages at work this week. You actually don't even need to see the page though since it is so easy. I'll explain how I did it step by step:

1) I marked both shafts, the flywheel, the clutch fork, and all the guibos.
2) I took the fasteners off of all the guibos (front center and rear)
3) I took the nuts off of the center bearing support and lowered it slowly onto a jack (I didn't want the driveshaft to pivot too far down since I was afraid of bending something)
4) I also dosconnected the rear engine mount and lowered the engine down a little when I was ready to take off the shaft
5) This is the trick from the manual: They use a large screwdriver (I used a medium sized prybar) and you slowly work your way around the rear guibo prying lightly between the guibo and the clutch fork. What you are trying to do is pull the guibo off enough so the rubber disk comes off over the clutch fork "spigot". The guibo (and the shaft) only need to come forwrad about 1/2" and with the play you created in loosening all the guibos you have enough room. Once the rear guibo clears the spigot the shaft came right out no problems.

Hope this helps

Thanks AlfaBeta .I can see how dropping the rear of the engine would help provide a little space to pry the rear guibo of the clutch spider.I'll have to give this one a try the next time I have to tackle my favourite job !
Any idea why all the guibo bolts have to be removed ? I can't envisage how that would make any difference.

Hi Murray,

Yeah it probably doesn't make a difference (just take the ones on the driveshaft flange). I was replacing my guibos anyway so I just took them all off.
