Lower octane can be better

I was using a 98 RON petrol (gasoline; BP Ultimate for you Aussies) in my 1987 V6 2.5. One day I had to use "premium" unleaded instead (long story) and filled it with 95 RON (Caltex Vortex). To my surprise it ran much more smoothly at idle, and I have heard from others since that the V6s, at least, may run better on 95 than 98.

As for oil -- to my embarrassment I found I had let it run below the minimum and hadn't checked it in a couple of months (suicide for an Alfa owner, I know). So I filled it with Castrol GTX2, I believe it's 20W50. I used to use this ridiculous 50W70 in my 33 when it had a terrible valve stem leak, in an attempt to cure the smoking. It didn't work, but since it led me to buy my 75, I'm not unhappy!

I've noticed similar results Matt K. BP Ultimate makes my idle pretty nasty, Caltex Premium seems to be nicer!

In my Milano 3.0 I use Castrol 20w50 non-synth and 93 octane petrol. It's only about 2$ extra per full tank for high-octane, which is why I can't believe everyone doesn't use premium! (from what I understand high-octane=better fuel economy.) I guess some people just don't love their cars like I do. I suppose if I had to drive a chevy cavalier, or a buick, or something I'd probably stick 87 octane in it just to spite it!

Top Tier Gas

For the sake of completeness here is the link to Top Tier Gas:

http://www.toptiergas.com/index.html

It is a US consortium of BMW, General Motors, Honda, and Toyota formed to induce oil companies to add the proper additive packages to their fuels. On the "Retailers" page it lists gas station brands that meet the Top Tier GAs standards.

Discloser: I have no financial interest in any oil company or car company, I am just an Alfa owner who wants the best for my baby.
